PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The top-ranked Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team overcame a second-period one-goal deficit to beat nationally-regarded Utica College, 3-1, in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's West action at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena on Sunday. The Cardinals improve to 16-1 overall and 10-1 in the league, while Pioneers, who are receiving votes toward both national polls, are 9-7 and 4-5. Plattsburgh State's ranking is according to the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll.
Plattsburgh State junior
Kayla Meneghin (Clifton, N.J./The Gunnery) scored twice and classmate
Megan Crandell (Fullerton, Calif./Saint Norbert) chipped in the other goal. Senior
Erin Brand (Long Beach, N.Y./Syracuse) and sophomores
Muna Fadel (Belle River, Ontario/Southwest Jr. Wildcats) and
Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) assisted. Sophomore
Mackenzie Millen (Anchorage, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy) went 10-of-18 on faceoffs and senior
Camille Leonard (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets) collected 14 saves for the win.
Meneghin's two-goal outing upped her career goal total to 60 and moved her past Stephanie Moberg '10 for eighth in program history. Leonard, meanwhile, logged her 65th career win to inch closer to Sydney Aveson's '14 career victories record of 69.
Utica junior Taylor Osowski netted an unassisted goal and classmate Meghan Power won eight draws. Senior Keira Goin turned in 36 saves in net.
After a scoreless opening period, Utica jumped on the board first with Osowski burying an unassisted tally 1:12 into the second stanza. Osowski collected her own rebound in the middle of the slot, skated past one Cardinal defender and backhanded a low shot into the left side. The hosts nearly tied five minutes later as Meneghin and Songin darted in 2-on-1, with Songin's low-slot one-time bid getting gobbled up by Goin. Plattsburgh State senior
Katelyn Turk (Mississauga, Ontario/Etobicoke Jr. Dolphins) then rang a shot off of the left post at 12:45 but the Cardinals finally broke through for the equalizer at 14:08. Off of an offensive zone faceoff win, Fadel dished up to Brand, whose point slapshot was redirected into the left side by Meneghin.
Utica, which handed Plattsburgh State its only loss last season, nearly went back ahead while on the power play at 4:35 of the third period when sophomore Danielle Haasbeek hit the crossbar. The Cardinals quickly countered as the crossbar carom bounced to Songin, who fed up to Meneghin and Menegin raced up ice uncontested before backhanding a short-handed shot into the open net at 4:45 for a 2-1 lead. The Pioneers' best chances to even up the score came just past the midway point during a 1:20 stretch when the Cardinals were unable to clear their defensive zone. Utica peppered three shots on Leonard and senior Gabrielle Schnepp saw her point shot clang off of the right post. The visitors managed only one more shot on net before Crandell iced the game with an empty-net goal at 18:45.
Plattsburgh State is on the road for its three games, beginning with an ECAC Women's West contest at SUNY Cortland on Friday at 7 p.m.
