UTICA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team split on day one of the Utica College Tournament Friday at the Harold T. Clark Athletic Center, defeating Lasell College, 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-17), before falling to the Stevens Institute of Technology, 3-0 (25-20, 25-9, 25-18).
Plattsburgh State moves to 9-8 overall with the results and wraps up action at the event tomorrow with matches against Union (N.Y.) College (12 p.m.) and Wells College (4 p.m.). Lasell falls to 4-10, while Stevens moves to 16-2.
Plattsburgh State 3, Lasell 0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-17)
The Cardinals hit .136 in their opening match of the day while limiting Lasell to .082 hitting. Plattsburgh State finished with a 6-3 edge in service aces, while Lasell held a 4.5-3 advantage in total team blocks.
Sophomore outside hitter
Sam Colombo (Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) led Plattsburgh State with 12 kills and 11 digs for a double-double, while sophomore setter
Sydney Gabriel (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) handed out 22 assists and floored three aces. Defensively, freshman defensive specialist
Bryanne Yasui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua) and freshman outside hitter/right side
Hunter Grotjohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) defended 21 and 13 digs, respectively.
For Lasell, sophomore middle hitter Olivia Addington led the way offensively with seven kills, while junior setter Lauren Piper doled out 11 assists. Junior outside hitter Meredith Eagan posted three total blocks (one solo, two assist), while junior libero/defensive specialist Caitlyn Garcia collected 16 digs.
Stevens 3, Plattsburgh State 0 (25-20, 25-9, 25-18)
Plattsburgh State was unable to match the offensive firepower of Stevens in the nightcap, as the Ducks hit .289 for the match. Stevens also finished with a 10-4 edge in total team blocks and held the upper hand in service aces, 8-6.
Grotjohn posted the Cardinals' top offensive performance with a .294 hitting percentage off five kills and no errors in 17 total attempts, while Yasui and Gabriel offered seven and six assists, respectively, setting in a 6-2 offense. Junior defensive specialist
Jordynne Ales (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) paced the back row defensively with 14 digs, while freshman middle hitter
Tatyana Barlow (Palmdale, Calif./Pete Knight) and senior outside hitter/right side
Lexi Pascal (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) each posted three block assists.
For Stevens, senior outside hitter Mary Tobin led the way with 14 kills, while sophomore setter Brianna Perez handed out 28 assists. Defensively, junior libero Sydni Horner and sophomore outside hitter Emily Piekarski defended 11 and 10 digs, respectively, while freshman middle blocker Shelby Stewart registered seven total blocks (three solo, four assist).
