UTICA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the second and final day of the Utica College Tournament Saturday, falling, 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-14, 25-20), to Union (N.Y.) College before dropping a 3-1 (26-24, 25-22, 16-25, 25-19) decision to Wells College.
Plattsburgh State drops to 9-10 overall with the losses and next visits SUNY Canton on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. Union moves to 14-7, while Wells moves to 11-5.
Union 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-14, 25-20)
Union's offense fired on all cylinders in the first match of the day, hitting .319. The Dutchwomen also held an 11-4 edge in service aces and a 4.5-4 margin in total team blocks.
Freshman outside hitter/right side
Hunter Grotjohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) led the Cardinal offense with a 13-kill performance, while sophomore outside hitter
Sam Colombo (Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) posted a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore setter
Sydney Gabriel (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) dished out 32 assists, while freshman defensive specialist
Bryanne Yasui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua) defended 32 digs.
For Union, senior outside hitter Ally VanDoren and junior middle hitter Gillian O'Dowd floored 13 and 10 kills, respectively, while senior setter Amanda Price doled out 45 assists. Five Dutchwomen reached double-digit figures in digs, led by senior libero Katherine Moller with 22.
Wells 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (26-24, 25-22, 16-25, 25-19)
The Express attack hit .248 in the nightcap, and Wells outblocked Plattsburgh State by a 6-3 margin. Both teams finished with seven service aces.
Colombo registered yet another double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs, while senior outside hitter/right side
Lexi Pascal (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) floored 11 kills. Gabriel paced the offense with 39 assists, while Yasui collected 13 digs and four service aces.
For Wells, junior outside hitter/right side Olyvia Brazier led the way with 15 kills and 18 digs, while junior setter Eliza Schwab distributed 36 assists.
