OSWEGO, N.Y. – A four-goal second half by the No. 18 Plattsburgh State men's soccer team helped vault the Cardinals to a 5-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over Oswego State on Friday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium.
After the Lakers tied the score at 1-all with 1:42 left before the halftime intermission, senior forward
Alexis Archilla (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) put the Cardinals on top in the 56th minute, scoring from the right post off a ball sent in from the midfield from freshman defender
Joe Gula (New Market, Md./Oakdale). The Cardinals ended up scoring three more goals to spell the final score of 5-1.
Plattsburgh State rises to 9-1-0 overall (2-0-0 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits SUNY Cortland tomorrow at 1 p.m. Oswego drops to 3-7-0 overall (0-3-0 SUNYAC) with the loss and hosts SUNY Potsdam tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Senior forward
Chris Bowden (Commack, N.Y./Commack) opened scoring in the 31st minute, finding the back of the net from the right post off of a rebound. Oswego's 44th-minute goal came off the head of senior forward Brody Magro, who headed in a cross from sophomore defender Justin Delavalle.
In the second half, Archilla struck first at 55:53, followed by a goal from senior defender/midfielder
Ryan Miller (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington) off of a pass by junior midfielder
Nicholas Laurent (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) less than three minutes later. Bowden scored his second goal of the game at 67:55 off a feed from senior midfielder
Jonathan Gamboa (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), while junior forward
Jon Cabeca (Briarcliff, N.Y./Briarcliff) fired in his first goal of the season in the 81st minute off a pass from junior midfielder/defender
Sean Maruscsak (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) to round out scoring in the contest.
Plattsburgh State finished with a 25-10 edge in shots—including a 13-4 margin in the second half—and an 8-3 cushion in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper
Andrew LaClaustra (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) earned the win in between the posts for the Cardinals, making five saves, while sophomore goalkeeper Evan Bogucki turned aside six shots for the Lakers.
