POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team split a pair of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matches during pool play action at SUNY Potsdam on Saturday at the Maxcy Hall Field House, defeating host Potsdam, 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-17), before falling to Fredonia, 3-1 (16-25, 25-9, 25-21, 25-23).
Plattsburgh State moves to 8-7 overall (1-2 SUNYAC) with the results and next competes at the Utica College Tournament from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Potsdam drops to 9-4 overall (0-3 SUNYAC) and next visits St. Lawrence University on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m., while Fredonia moves to 9-6 overall (2-1 SUNYAC) and next visits Medaille College on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m.
Plattsburgh State 3, Potsdam 0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-17)
Plattsburgh State hit at a .269 clip against the Bears in the first match of the day while limiting Potsdam to .077 hitting. The Cardinals also finished with a 9-6 edge in service aces, while both teams posted two blocks.
Sophomore outside hitter
Sam Colombo (Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs, while freshman outside hitter/right side
Hunter Grotjohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) landed 14 kills. Sophomore setter
Sydney Gabriel (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) issued 32 assists, while freshman defensive specialist
Bryanne Yasui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua) defended 21 digs.
For Potsdam, senior outside hitter Stephanie Maddox tallied a team-high seven kills, while sophomore setter Brianna Rodda doled out 16 assists. Junior opposite Rachel Topf paced the back row defensively with 12 digs.
Fredonia 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (16-25, 25-9, 25-21, 25-23)
After winning the first set by a comfortable margin, Plattsburgh State was unable to sustain the momentum against a strong Fredonia squad, as the Blue Devils hit .209 for the match.
Grotjohn and Colombo each led Plattsburgh State with eight kills apiece, while Gabriel dished out 27 assists and floored three aces. Defensively, sophomore middle hitter
Shelby Bourgeois (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) totaled four blocks (one solo, three assist), while Yasui defended 22 digs.
For Fredonia, junior outside hitter Kristen Stanek and junior middle hitter Jane Garrity each reached double-digit figures in kills with 16 and 10, respectively, while freshman setter Amanda Mosack handed out 49 assists. Junior libero Rachel Poirier led the back row defensively with 14 digs.
