POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team took the second and third sets to mount a 2-1 lead, but the Cardinals ended up falling, 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10), to Oswego State in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener for both teams at SUNY Potsdam's Maxcy Hall Field House on Friday.
The Cardinals drop to 7-6 overall (0-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and continue SUNYAC action tomorrow with matches against host Potsdam (10 a.m.) and Fredonia (3 p.m.). Oswego rises to 9-5 overall (1-0 SUNYAC) with the win and faces SUNY New Paltz (10 a.m.) and SUNY Geneseo (12:30 p.m.) tomorrow.
Sophomore outside hitter
Sam Colombo (Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) led the Cardinals with yet another double-double (14 kills and 16 digs), while freshman outside hitter/right side
Hunter Grotjohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) also posted a double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs. Sophomore setter
Sydney Gabriel (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) paced the offense with 39 assists, while freshman defensive specialist
Bryanne Yasui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua) and Colombo each finished with three service aces. Yasui helped reinforce the back row defensively with 22 digs.
For Oswego, sophomore right side/outside hitter Ariel Murawski and senior right side Meaghan Roefs tallied 16 and 11 kills, respectively, while senior setters Lauren Edwards and Lindsey Champitto dished out 22 and 20 assists, respectively. Defensively, junior libero Rina Qelaj and senior outside hitter Emma Moriarty provided 21 and 20 digs, respectively, while Roefs registered five total blocks (one solo, four assist).
