SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – It was a comeback that fell just short for the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team on Saturday. Clawing back from a 2-0 deficit, the Cardinals fell in double overtime to the Skidmore Thoroughbreds, 3-2.
The Thoroughbreds gained the early momentum on Saturday when Emma Basso beat Cardinal goalie
Nichole Gibson (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport Central) in the 20' minute for the 1-0 lead.
Back and forth possession for the remainder of the half kept the score 1-0 at the break. Both Skidmore and Plattsburgh State had five shots up though the intermission.
It was the Thoroughbreds who struck first in the second half of play. Emily Saliterman found the ball off a Skidmore throw in and ripped a hard shot past an outstretched Gibson in the 51' minute.
The Thoroughbreds now held a 2-0 lead, which did not last very long.
Cardinal midfielder
Lucy Wedge (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla) received the ball in the 18-yard box snuck a shot in the corner far post for her fourth goal of the season. Wedge's tally came a mere 27 seconds after Skidmore's second goal.
It took some time for the Cardinals to use the boost in momentum, but when they did it was freshman
Katie Matott (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) who scored the equalizer in the 88' minute.
Matott found a rebound after teammate
Anissa Hartmann (Fairfax, Vt./BFA Fairfax) had a breakaway opportunity that deflected off Thoroughbred goalie Alyssa Rollins.
Neither team could make anything of the final minutes of regulation, taking the contest to overtime.
With a scoreless first overtime, it was Skidmore who prevailed in the second overtime frame when Phoebe Martell-Crawf launched a shot from 40 yards out that sailed just under the cross bar and just over the tip of Gibson's glove.
The goal came in the 106' minute and gave the Thoroughbreds a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals.
Gibson made 10 saves in net for Plattsburgh State.
The Cardinals are now 4-2 this season. Looking to return to the win column, Plattsburgh State will be on the road yet again to play St. Lawrence University on Tuesday.
