NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team remained undefeated on Wednesday evening, using an early goal and two late insurance scores to come away with a 3-0 victory over non-conference Norwich University at Sabine Field.
After a first half in which both teams played evenly, the Cardinals began to generate more offensive chances in the second stanza, scoring two late insurance goals to come away with the victory. After the two teams posted five shots each in the first half, Plattsburgh State wound up outshooting Norwich, 15-9, for the contest. The Cardinals also finished with eight corner kicks to the Cadets' three.
Plattsburgh State moves to 6-0-0 overall with the win, marking the 13th 6-0-0 start in program history. The Cardinals next visit Skidmore College on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m. Norwich drops to 2-3-1 with the loss and next hosts Johnson & Wales University in a conference match on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m.
Junior defender
Jah-heem Lawitz (Albany, N.Y./Albany) fired off the opening salvo in the seventh minute of the contest, collecting a header goal off of a corner kick. Junior midfielder
Ian Spear (Peru, N.Y./Peru) and junior midfielder/defender
Max Delavalle (Rock Tavern, N.Y./Washingtonville) both were credited with assists on the play after Spear played in the corner kick to Delavalle at the top of the 18-yard box, and Delavalle served the ball to the left side of the goal. Lawitz got his head on the ball and lifted it over the Norwich goalkeeper to put the Cardinals on top early.
Norwich largely kept Plattsburgh State from generating scoring chances down the stretch in the first half, and the Cardinals brought a slim 1-0 advantage into the intermission.
After Norwich took four shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half, play began to take place in the Cardinals' attacking third. Plattsburgh State finally tacked on a second goal in the 76th minute off an unassisted marker by sophomore forward
Alex Price (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown), who took advantage of a Norwich turnover and used open space on the right side of the field to slot the ball past the Cadets' keeper. Finally, in the 83rd minute, junior midfielder
Nicholas Laurent (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) finished off a shot from senior forward
Chris Bowden (Commack, N.Y./Commack) right inside the six-yard box.
Junior goalkeeper
Andrew LaClaustra (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) picked up his third shutout of the season with a two-save performance for the Cardinals, while his counterpart, sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Fitzpatrick, made five saves in the loss.
