SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A first-half goal by senior defender/midfielder
Alex Price (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) was all the offense the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team needed to remain unbeaten, as the Cardinals topped non-conference Skidmore College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
Plattsburgh State got on the board in the 17th minute, as Price corralled the ball off of a tipped pass and blasted a shot from 25 yards out past the Skidmore keeper to the left. That early lead stood up throughout the remainder of the contest, as the Cardinals escaped with the win.
The victory moves Plattsburgh State to 7-0-0 overall and sets the Cardinals up for a battle of unbeaten teams on Tuesday, Sept. 20, when No. 5 St. Lawrence University (6-0-0) visits the Field House Soccer Complex for a 7 p.m. non-conference match. Skidmore drops to 2-3-0 with the loss and visits the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts next on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 5 p.m.
Skidmore appeared to have leveled the score moments after Price's goal, as freshman midfielder Kyle Barrett found the back of the net off a through ball from junior midfielder Kevin Santos. Barrett was whistled offside, however, negating the goal.
In a game marked by physical play, Plattsburgh finished with a 7-6 edge in shots, while both teams registered two corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper
Andrew LaClaustra (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) posted his fourth clean sheet of the year in the winning effort, making two saves. Senior goalkeeper Derrick Yam turned aside three shots in the loss for Skidmore.
