PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team continues to roll, as the Cardinals claimed the St. Joseph's (L.I.) Invitational title by defeating St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) College, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at Danzi Stadium located on the campus of St. Joseph's (L.I.) College.
The Cardinals posted a 2-0 record at the invitational, topping host St. Joseph's (L.I.) by a 4-1 final yesterday. New Jersey City University also went 2-0 on the weekend, but Plattsburgh State won the goal differential tiebreaker to claim the invitational title.
Senior defender
Nick Economou (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) was named the invitational's Most Outstanding Defensive Player, while junior goalkeeper
Andrew LaClaustra (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) was named the event's Most Outstanding Goalkeeper.
The Cardinals move to 5-0-0 overall now and traverse Lake Champlain on Wednesday, Sept. 14, to square off with Norwich University at 7 p.m. St. Joseph's drops to 2-2-0 and next visits Hunter College on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m.
After senior forward
Alexis Archilla (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) scored in the 22nd minute off a feed from senior midfielder
Jonathan Gamboa (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) to put the Cardinals on the board, Plattsburgh State fired off three goals in the final four minutes of the first half to take a 4-0 lead into the intermission.
Sophomore forward
Chris Robertson (Thiells, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional [N.J.]) chipped the Bears' keeper one-on-one in the 42nd minute after receiving a pass from LaClaustra, and less than two minutes later, Robertson scored again, firing in a left-footed shot from the right side. Finally, freshman forward
Sean Cray (Modena, N.Y./Wallkill) converted on a penalty kick with 49 seconds to go in the half to compete Plattsburgh State's scoring in the first half.
The Cardinals tacked on one final score in the 59th minute, as sophomore forward
Alex Price (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) took advantage of a turnover by the St. Joseph's goalkeeper and slotted the ball into the goal from the right-hand side of the field. That ended up being the last goal of the contest, as Plattsburgh State completed the weekend sweep to keep its winning streak intact.
Plattsburgh State finished with a 34-4 margin in shots and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.
With his goal, Archilla now has 43 career goals to his credit, which gives him sole possession of the fourth-place spot in the program's record book. Rich King (1993-96), Chris Gondek (1995-98) and current assistant coach

LaClaustra made two saves in 57:37 of action in goal for the Cardinals before handing the reins off to freshman goalkeepers
Patrick Feeley (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and
Kiernan Kirby (East Northport, N.Y./Northport), who did not face a shot in the final 32:23. Freshman goalkeeper Julian Rodriguez weathered the barrage of Cardinal shots well for St. Joseph's, making nine saves in 86:27 of work. Freshman goalkeeper Juan Sandoval came off the bench to make one save in the final 3:33 of regulation.
