Cardinals Fall in Waning Seconds to Brockport, 11-10

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team (4-6, 0-1 SUNYAC) dropped its conference opener to Brockport (8-2, 1-1 SUNYAC) in the final ticks of the fourth quarter, 11-10 Saturday afternoon at the Field House Complex.

Sophomore Ryan Hubbard led the Cardinals with four points on three goals and an assist. Senior attackman Pat Nash also added three goals for Plattsburgh State. Goaltender Matt Massaria finished with a game-high 12 saves, including nine in the second half.

Despite the Cardinals controlling procession in most of the first quarter, Brockport took control of the game early, scoring the first goal of the game and holding a 3-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes. The Golden Eagles' Marcus Palvino would tally two of the three goals for Brockport while Brendan Fitzgerald chipped in the other.

Brockport would continue to add to its lead in the second quarter even though Plattsburgh State outshot the Golden Eagles by a 12-4 margin. Mike Gay would get the Cardinals back within one at 3-2 with 9:11 left on the clock. Brockport would score two-striaght in a 1:16 span to balloon the lead to 5-2. Palvino would contribute on both Golden Eagles, getting his third of the afternoon before assisting on the next goal by Jake Giudice. Hubbard would get his first with 2:40 left in the second, but again, Palvino would answer with his game-high fourth less than a minute later to give Brockport a 6-3 advantage at half.

The Cardinals would dominate the third, outscoring Brockport 3-0 to tie the game up at six apiece to enter the final quarter of play. Mike Gay would get the Cardinals rolling with his second of the afternoon before Nash would net the next two to tie the game including finding the back of the net with one second left on a hail mary pass from Colin Cunningham.

The fourth quarter featured flair from start to finish as the two teams combined for nine goals. Plattsburgh State would complete its comeback to take its first lead at 7-6 on Hubbard's second of the day. It capped off a four-straight goal stretch to open the second half by the Cardinals.

Brockport would answer again less than a minute later to tie it up 7-7. Nick DeCeglia would rip a shot man-up from his midfield postion before Hubbard converted another home run pass over the Brockport defense this time from defender Joey Duckham.

As soon as the Cardinals took a two goal advantage, Brockport's John Countryman would net two of his own in a 55 second span to bring the game back level at 9-9. The Golden Eagles would then take the lead 10-9 with 4:03 left in the game. Brockport would win the ensuing draw, but the Plattsburgh State would force a turnover to give the offense a shot. Senior and two-time All American Brendan Damm would answer the call with his team-high 20th goal of the season beating the Golden Eagle defense with just 1:09 to make it 10-10. Brockport would again win the draw and hold for the last shot. After missing wide, John Countryman started with the ball behind the net passing it to Jake Giudice who scored the game-winner with 6.7 seconds left, beating a sliding Massaria.

Conor Nowak made three saves for Brockport while Palvino finished with a game-high five points and four goals.

Plattsburgh State topped Brockport in shots (38-30) and ground balls (49-33). After Cardinals dominated the circle in the first half (8-for-11), Brockport would close the game by going 9-for-12. Plattsburgh State struggled on the man advantage going just 1-for-7, but kept the Golden Eagles from converting on any of their four chances.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to North Country rival Potsdam for a 7 p.m. matchup as Plattsburgh State looks to even up its conference record.
