Cardinals Battle Bears to 10-8 Victory

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team (5-6, 1-1 SUNYAC) traveled to North Country rival Potsdam on Wednesday night, defeating the Bears (9-2, 2-1 SUNYAC) 10-8.

Senior Pat Nash led the Cardinals with five points on a career-high five goals. Fellow senior Brendan Damm chipped in three assists while Ryan Hubbard added a pair of goals. Goaltender Matt Massaria picked up his fifth win of the season, making 13 saves in the process.

The Cardinals would take an early 1-0 advantage on a Pat Nash man-up goal less than three minutes into the contest.

Potsdam would respond with two straight goals to close out the first quarter to take a 2-1 lead into the second. Casey Boulio would score the first before Michael Rokuous would take the lead on a man-up goal.

Plattsburgh State would respond in the second, erupting for five goals. Ryan Hubbard would equalize the game at 2-2 just 39 seconds into the second quarter. Potsdam's Matt Moran would give the Bears the lead back answering the Cardinals goal a minute later. Plattsburgh would light the scoreboard with two straight by Nash to put the Cardinals back in front 4-3. Less than a minute later, Eric Soderquist would tie the game back up for Potsdam with his 24th of the season. Matt Prokesch and Nash would combine for a pair of Cardinal goals in a 58 second span to give Plattsburgh State a 6-4 advantage at halftime.

Austin Belz opened the third quarter with an early goal for the Cardinals to make it 7-4. Potsdam would stop the Cardinals 3-0 run when Roukous found the back of the net to make it 7-5. 21 seconds after the Roukous goal, Plattsburgh State  longstick midfielder Kyle Espejo would score his first goal as a Cardinal in transition to re-take a three goal advantage. Potsdam would then score two straight before the Cardinals scored two straight of their own, making it 10-7 Plattsburgh State heading into the final 15 minutes.

In the final quarter, both teams battled defensively as both goalies Massaria and Potsdam's Peter Gropp would make save after save to keep their respective teams alive. The Bears would tally the lone goal of the quarter four minutes in to make it 10-8 Cardinals on Moran's 15th of the year.

Gropp finished with a game-high 15 saves for the Bears.

Potsdam held slight advantages in shots (43-37) and face-offs (13-8).

Both clubs finished 2-for-5 on the man-advantage.

Plattsburgh State will look to keep the momentum rolling into Geneseo on Saturday, as first year head coach Joe May will led the Cardinals against his alma mater in another SUNYAC battle.
