GENESEO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team (6-6, 2-1 SUNYAC) hit the road for its Western N.Y. trip against SUNY Geneseo (5-6, 1-3 SUNYAC) Saturday afternoon, slaying the Knights, 19-8.
Sophomore
Ryan Hubbard led the way for the Cardinals, scoring a career-high eight points on five goals and three assists. Eight other Cardinals collected multiple points in Saturday afternoon's victory.
Matt Massaria started the game in net for the Plattsburgh State, picking up his second straight win.
Geneseo scored the first goal of the game, converting a man-up opportunity by Kyle Wanamaker 1:39 into the game. Plattsburgh State would answer 21 seconds later to tie the game at one apiece when
Brendan Damm found Hubbard alone on top of the crease. All quarter the Cardinals and Knights would trade goals until Geneseo scored with two seconds left in the first to take a 4-3 lead. Two of the four Knights goals came via the man-up.
The Cardinals would dominate the Knights in the second quarter, outscoring Geneseo 5-0. Hubbard would get the scoring started in the second frame by finding the back of the net 39 seconds in to tie it at 4-4. Midfielder
Mike Gay gave the Cardinals their first lead of the day at 5-4 three minutes later. Fellow midfielder
Austin Belz converted a man-up goal for Plattsburgh State to make it 6-4 midway through the quarter. Hubbard would cap off the five goal second with two straight in 28 seconds to double up the Knights 8-4 heading into the half.
Coming out of halftime, Geneseo would score two in a row to cut the Plattsburgh State lead in half and close within two at 8-6. However, the Cardinals would get the two right back as Damm scored his team-high 21
st and then Gay would get his second of the game with just 16 seconds remaining in the third quarter to make it 10-6.
In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals would explode for nine goals to put the Knights away.
Ryan Callahan and Hubbard would get things going scoring two goals in four seconds in the opening minute.
Matt Renko would make it 13-6 with 13:24 left. Callahan would score the next two goals to complete his hat-trick performance on the afternoon and make it 16-7. The next two goals would be scored by sophomore
Sean Adler, who netted his first two career goals as Cardinal.
Brandon Heimbuch would join the action getting his second goal of the season with 1:51 remaining in the game. Senior long stick midfielder
Ben Ramsdell would be the second Plattsburgh State Cardinal to get his first career goal as he broke free coming off the face-off, scoring 12 seconds after the Heimbuch goal to swell the lead to 19-7. Geneseo would get one late when Ryan Kelly scored his second of the game.
All four Cardinal goalies saw action in Saturday's game. Sophomore
Donald Tesoriero led the way for Plattsburgh State, making five saves in a little over 37 minutes of playing time.
Michael Yehl played all but the final 1:39 for the Knights making 13 saves in the process. Kelly led the Knights with three points on two goals and an assist. Wanamaker joined Kelly as the only two knights with multiple goals on the afternoon.
Plattsburgh State fancied the face-off circle, going 23-for-30, which led to multiple back-to-back goals in a quick spurts. The Cardinals also held commanding advantages in shots (49-30) and ground balls (45-25). Senior
Joey Kromer finished with a game-high 13 ground balls and went over 80-percent (17-for-21) on face-offs.
Geneseo did see success on its special teams units, going 3-for-6 on the man-advantage while limiting Plattsburgh State to 1-for-5.
Now fighting back to .500 and 2-1 in SUNYAC, the Cardinals will look to keep the momentum going when they travel to Cortland to challenge the Red Dragons on Saturday.
