CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team (6-7, 2-2 SUNYAC) took its final road trip of the 2016 regular season as it visited Cortland Saturday afternoon to take on the Red Dragons (9-5, 4-0 SUNYAC), falling by the final score of 11-9.
Mathew Prokesch (2G, 1A) and
Ryan Hubbard (3G) paced the Cardinals offense with three points each.
Brendan Damm (1G, 1A) and
Pat Nash (2G) also collected multiple points in Saturday's game. Goalie Matthew Massaria finished with a game-high 13 saves as he kept the Cortland offense at bay coming down the stretch.
Cortland would score the opening goal of the game 10 seconds in on the first of a three-goal game from Devin Phelps. Plattsburgh State would respond 38 seconds later when Prokesch converted a man-up opportunity. Zach Hopps and Ryan Mahon would score combine for the next two goals for the Red Dragons to take a 3-1 advantage with 3:53 remaining in the first quarter. Prokesch would get his second of the game and cut the Cortland lead down to 3-2. Right as it looked like the first quarter was ending Cortland converted a goal with just two seconds left to take a 4-2 lead into the first intermission.
The second quarter saw Cortland score four more goals, as the Cardinals stuck around by scoring three of their own. Damm got the quarter started scoring 58 seconds in for his 22nd of the year. The Red Dragons and Cardinals would trade a pair of goals before Cortland went on a 3-1 run to close the first half to hold an 8-5 lead at halftime.
Pat Nash would get the goal for Plattsburgh State during that stretch coming via man-up for his team-leading eighth extra-man goal.
The third quarter started how the second ended with Cortland scoring two straight to start the second half. It was part a 5-1 run overall that ballooned the Red Dragon lead to 10-5 over Plattsburgh State. Hubbard would end the streak and bring the game back to 10-6, but Phelps would respond for Cortland to make it 11-6. Nash got his second with 1:44 left in the third to again pull the Cardinals back within four heading into the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals would get the momentum rolling in the final 15 minutes as they outscored the Red Dragons 2-0 to end the game a 4-1 run of their own. Hubbard got his hat-trick with 10:40 in the game to make it 11-8. Senior
Mitch LaBianca made it 11-9 with 3:01 left but the Cardinals would run out of time to before completing the comeback.
Red Dragon goalie Joe Scalise made seven saves on the afternoon as Cortland outshot Plattsburgh State 38-30.
The biggest disparity came in the face off circle. After dominating that stat most of the year leading into today's contest, Plattsburgh State went just 6-for-18 on the afternoon. Cortland also did a good job winning 50/50 balls after finishing with a 45-23 advantage in ground balls.
Plattsburgh State performed well on the special teams, going 2-for-3 on the man advantage. The Cardinals avoid the box as well, only taking one penalty all game and killing off the lone Cortland man-up opportunity.
The Cardinals will return to the Field House Complex on Wednesday to host SUNYAC foe Oneonta at 4 p.m.
