Cardinals Attack too much for Oneonta, 14-7

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team (7-7, 3-2 SUNYAC) hosted Oneonta on Wednesday afternoon, doubling the Red Dragons, 14-7.

The Cardinals were lead by their three attackman as Brendan Damm (4G, 1A) and Ryan Hubbard (5G) each finished with five points while Pat Nash chipped another three goals. Combined, the three contributed 12 of the 14 goals for Plattsburgh State. Goalie, Matt Masseria got his sixth win of the season, making eight saves on 13 shots on goal.

Plattsburgh State netted the first goal of the game when defenseman Michael Van Bommel went coast-to-coast, scoring his first collegiate goal and giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Oneonta would counter with two straight goals to take a 2-1 lead. Plattsburgh State would close the first quarter with three straight goals including two in a 10-second span when Hubbard and Damm both beat Oneonta goalie Ryan Adler at 7:19 and 7:09 respectively.

The second quarter started how the first ended with two more Cardinal goals from Nash and Damm. It was part of a 5-0 run that put Plattsburgh State up 6-2 with 11:39 left in the second. Oneonta would fight back, scoring the next two to cut it back to 6-4. For the rest of the second quarter, the Cardinals and Red Dragons would trade a pair of goals. Nash would get his second and Hubbard would complete his hat track as Plattsburgh State led Oneonta 8-6 at the break.

The second half belonged to Plattsburgh State as it outscored Oneonta 4-0 in the third quarter and 6-1 for the entire half. Damm and Hubbard would each score two goals in the third to make it 12-6 Cardinals entering the final 15 minutes.

In the fourth, Nash would get his third of the afternoon before Ryan Callahan would put on the finishing touches for the Cardinals with his 13th of the year, making it 14-6. Oneonta would get one back late in the fourth to finish it at 14-7.

The Red Dragons' goalie, Ryan Adler finished with 14 saves on 28 shots on goal.

Together, senior Joey Kromer (13-for-20) and sophomore Joe Eiseman (4-for-5) owned the faceoff circle by going a combined 17-for-25 in the dot.

On the day, Plattsburgh State dominated Oneonta in every statistical category, including shots (64-24) and ground balls (39-25).

A big key on the afternoon was the ability of the Cardinals able to force 22 Red Dragon turnovers, which held the Oneonta clear percentage down to 60-percent.

The Cardinals will look to solidify their playoff position in their last regular season game again Oswego State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
