PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State lacrosse team welcomed North Country rival St. Lawrence into town for a Wednesday night contest under the lights that featured snow from start to finish. When it was all said and done, the Saints edged the Cardinals 11-7.
Plattsburgh State would come out of the gates hot, scoring two goals in a 3:02 span to take a 2-0 lead over St. Lawrence.
Ryan Hubbard and
Mitchell LaBianca would account for the two Cardinal goals.
The Saints would respond scoring three-straight to take a 3-2 before senior
Brendan Damm ended the run to tie the game 3-3 with 44 seconds left in the first quarter.
For the second consecutive game, second quarter struggles would be the difference maker in the contest for Plattsburgh. After RPI outscored the Cardinals 4-1 in the second stanza a week ago, St. Lawrence would net all five goals in the second to take a 8-3 lead into halftime.
Five different Saints would account for the goals but the one common denominator was Conor Healy. Healy assisted on five of the Saints opening eight goals and finished with six on the night.
To open the third quarter, St. Lawrence would get another goal to go up 9-3. The Saints scored six-straight goals that was a part of a 9-1 run.
Hubbard would end the streak cutting the St. Lawrence advantage to 9-4 on his scored his second of the evening.
In the fourth quarter the Cardinals would mount a bit of comeback to make it respectable.
Mike Gay would get his sixth of the year just 45 seconds into the final quarter. Man-up specialist Pat Nash got his 12th on the year and has a team-high fifth man advantage goals. Plattsburgh's goal lead, Damm would get his 19
th and second of the night as the Cardinals outpaced the Saints 3-1 in the final fifteen minutes to cut the score to 11-7.
Overall, St. Lawrence outshot Plattsburgh State 42-25 in the game. Cardinal goaltender
Matt Massaria finished with a season-high 14 saves while Saints netminder Ryan Fisher corralled eight saves.
Plattsburgh dominated St. Lawrence in the circle going 15-22 on face-offs and held a slight advantage in ground balls at 37-34.
Each team converted a man-up opportunity with the Cardinals finishing 1-3 and the Saints going 1-4.
The biggest disparity in the game came in the turnover category where the Cardinals nearly doubled the Saints, 19-10.
With loss the Cardinals slip under the Mendoza line at 4-5. The Cardinals now have dropped four games to teams ranked in the top 13 in the USILA poll including tonight against No. 8 St. Lawrence.
Plattsburgh State will conclude its three game home stand this Saturday against Brockport in the Cardinals first SUNYAC contest of the year.
