Cardinals Return to Win Column with Two Victories over Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team (20-12, 8-4 SUNYAC) got back in the win column with 5-3 and 13-7 victories over the Oswego State Lakers (13-12, 6-8 SUNYAC) on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Plattsburgh State 5, Oswego State 3

A sixth inning surge was the difference in the game one matchup. The Lakers held a narrow 3-2 leading heading into the top of the sixth where Plattsburgh State scored three runs to outlast the Lakers.

Amy Glashoff was the leadoff batter in the sixth for Plattsburgh State. She singled to left field and then would advance to second. A Samantha Railey sacrifice bunt sent Glashoff to third, opening the door for Kelsey Gage. The sophomore would single to center field, scoring Glashoff.

Two batters later and with two runners on base, Amanda Tantillo drove the ball to right-center, scoring two of Plattsburgh State's three runs in the inning.

The Cardinals faced a tough situation in the bottom of the seventh. Pitcher Morgan Anderson was doing her best for the complete game, but Lakers managed to load the bases with a good chance tie or win the game.

Katie Pitkin came in to get the two outs Plattsburgh State needed to seal the game one victory.

Anderson's final was six and one-third innings pitched, to go along with five strikeouts in getting the win.

Tantillo had a strong outing in game one, going 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI.

Game 2: Plattsburgh State 13, Oswego State 7

It took the Cardinals a few innings to get going in game two. Oswego State hung three runs on Plattsburgh State in the first inning.

It was the third inning though where the Cardinals caught up to the Lakers.

With the bases loaded, a wild pitch saw Anna Fisher score the Plattsburgh State's first run. After a Jennifer Groat walk, Dominique Zummo singled to bring in two runs and tie the game at three,

Plattsburgh State found one more run in the inning when Jackie Decker's groundout scored Groat from third.

The Lakers fought back in a big way. After a four running third inning from Plattsburgh State, the Cardinals tallied one run in the fourth and one in the fifth to jump out to a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.

That score changed drastically on Ashley Lyman's three run home run that leveled the scoring again. Oswego State pushed a few runners on base and caused Samantha Railey to come in to pitch for Plattsburgh State, taking the place of Katie Pitkin.

Oswego State would push one more across in the fifth frame; it would be the last run of the game for the Lakers.

The Cardinals were not done yet. Facing a one run deficit in the sixth, both Amanda Tantillo and Jackie Decker doubled and each brought in two runners in the late game surge.

Kaitlyn Preiss also pushed one run across on a single in an inning in which Plattsburgh State tallied five runs.

It was Tantillo again in the seventh inning, singling to right field and sending two more Cardinal baserunners home.

The sophomore from Florida, N.Y., Tantillo went 3-of-5 at the plate with four RBI in game two. Overall on the day, Tantillo went 6-for-8 from the batter's box and brought in seven RBI.

Samantha Railey would get the win in the circle for Plattsburgh State.

The Cardinals will continue west on their four game road trip to play a set of games with Fredonia on Sunday; games that were postponed earlier this season.
