PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – It doesn't get much better than being able to win on your home field. Just ask the Plattsburgh State softball team who was finally able to play at Cardinal Park due to field conditions, and in doing so picked up two wins over the Brockport Golden Eagles 11-3 and 3-2 on Friday afternoon and have now won seven games in a row.
Game 1: Plattsburgh 11, Brockport 3 (5 inn.)
The Cardinals offense exploded in the game one matchup with the Golden Eagles. After Brockport pushed one run across and broke the scoreless tie in the third inning, Plattsburgh responded with seven runs in the bottom of the frame.
With two runners on base, Cardinal freshman
Jennifer Groat singled to center field to open the flood gates for Plattsburgh.
Jackie Decker and
Amy Glashoff each picked up an RBI before
Kelsey Gage doubled to right center field to bring in two runs.
To finish off the seven run third inning,
Kaitlyn Preiss secured a base knock two batters later that also brought in two runs.
Trailing 8-1 heading into the fifth, Brockport was able to tally a couple runs on a Lindsay Wachna double to right center. Giving the Golden Eagles a little life.
It was Plattsburgh's offense however that showed again in the bottom of the fifth. Leading off in the bottom of the frame, Glashoff swung at the first pitch she saw and sent the ball deep left center, homering for her second time this season.
Up by seven runs, Groat entered the batter's box with two runners on base. The Ballston Spa, N.Y. native doubled bringing in
Anna Fisher to end the game in five innings by run rule, final score 11-3. Groat's heroics might perhaps have been an underlying theme on Friday.
Five Cardinals registered at least two hits, led by Groat and
Amanda Tantillo who each had three.
Morgan Anderson got the win on the mound for Plattsburgh, going all five innings and striking out three.
Game 2: Plattsburgh 3, Brockport 2
Game two was much quieter from an offensive standpoint. A third inning Tantillo home run to left field looked as if it may have been the only run of the game.
That was until Brockport loaded the bases in the top of the sixth.
Tabitha Butler came in as relief on the mound for
Katie Pitkin of Plattsburgh. After forcing an out at home, Brockport's Amanda Yuhas drew a walk that scored the tying run.
The Cardinals answered in the bottom of the sixth when Decker doubled to left center, scoring sophomore
Dominique Zummo and giving the Cardinals a one run advantage.
The Golden Eagles still have some life left in them. It was Wachna again who singled to third base and tied the game at two.
And just like it game one it was
Jennifer Groat who had the opportunity to win the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.
Groat swung at the first pitch and sent it through the right side of the infield, bringing home Fisher and giving the Cardinals the 3-2 victory in walk-off fashion.
Tantillo was the only Cardinal to tally two hits, and was one of three Cardinals, that includes Groat and Zummo, to pick up an RBI.
With the sweep Plattsburgh is 15-9 overall and 5-1 in SUNYAC play, while Brockport slips to 12-10 and remains winless in conference.
Plattsburgh State will return to Cardinal Park Saturday at noon for a double header with the SUNY Geneseo Knights.
