PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Both Plattsburgh State and SUNY Geneseo's Softball teams got the best of each other on Saturday afternoon, splitting a pair of conference games 5-4 and 10-1 at Cardinal Park.
Game 1: Plattsburgh 4, Geneseo 5
Entering game one, the Cardinals were red hot and on a seven game winning streak spanning back to April 8.
The Knights opened up a four run lead in the top of inning number three, besting Cardinals pitcher
Morgan Anderson.
Plattsburgh responded in the bottom of the frame however when
Dominique Zummo doubled to right center field to score
Kaitlyn Preiss.
With Zummo on second,
Jackie Decker doubled, bringing Zummo home. Cutting the Knights lead to two runs.
Geneseo would tally one run in the fourth on an Alyssa Persutti single down the right field line.
The Cardinals made a push in the sixth to gain the lead. Leading off, Decker tripled to center field, allowing
Amy Glashoff's single to bring a run in.
With a couple more Cardinals finding their way on base, Preiss' groundout to third base would bring in Glashoff.
Plattsburgh State's push to gain control of game one would come up short as both teams went scoreless in the seventh.
In getting the win, Geneseo snaps the Cardinals seven game win streak. Mikayla Moore went five innings on the mound for the Knights in earning the win.
Anderson went the distance for Plattsburgh in the losing effort.
Game 2: Plattsburgh 10, Geneseo 1 (6 inn.)
There is an old saying for getting back at your opponent… revenge is a dish best served cold.
The Cardinals were out to prove something in game two, and it's that they were capable of winning game one.
After a scoreless first and second inning, a triple by
Jennifer Groat and double by
Jackie Decker saw Plattsburgh take a 3-0 advantage.
Then in the fourth,
Nicole Cast would score for Plattsburgh on a
Kaitlyn Preiss ground out to second base. The very next batter,
Amanda Tantillo then singled through the right side to bring in
Kelsey Gage.
Meanwhile, Cardinal pitcher
Katie Pitkin was holding down the Geneseo offense. On the afternoon Pitkin saw one run cross the plate, however did not give up any earned runs, allowed only four hits and struck out four batters.
Plattsburgh had a comfortable 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Geneseo however, couldn't seem to find the right pitcher to solve the Cardinals bats at the plate.
That eventually caught up to them, as Plattsburgh exploded for five runs in the sixth frame.
It all started with a good ol' fashion inside the park home run for Preiss.
Jackie Decker singled through the right side for an RBI, followed by a wild pitch a few batters later which found Groat scoring and setting up runners on second and third for Gage with a chance to end the game via run rule.
Gage answered the question with a double to left center, scoring both runners and sending Geneseo home early.
Pitkin registered the win for Plattsburgh, while Taylor Moore gets the loss for Geneseo.
With the split the Cardinals are still in good shape, sitting at 16-10 overall and 6-2 in conference. Meanwhile the Knights slip to 11-13 and 4-4 in the SUNYAC.
Plattsburgh State will be home on Wednesday at 3 p.m. to take on the Clarkson Golden Knights at Cardinal Park.
