PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team hosted the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Ice Hockey Championship for the second straight year, but this season the Cardinals fell short of the conference crown, losing 7-1 to SUNY Geneseo Saturday night.
Geneseo scored two goals in the first period before blowing the game open with four in the second.
Matt Solomon would score two the goals both with blasts from the point beating Cardinals. Arthur Gordon and Zach Lynes would be beneficiary of fortunate rebounds as Cardinal goaltender
Spencer Finney made both initial saves but the bouncing puck would end up right on the sticks of the Geneseo players for easy put back goals.
With the game already at 4-0, the Ice Knights would convert on a 5-on-3 power play to make it 5-0. Again, Gordon would get credited of the goal as he finished off a pretty tic-tac-toe pass play for an easy one-time into the back of the net.
Stephen Collins would make it 6-0 sending a slap shot top corner from the slot on a one-on-one opportunity.
Geneseo would get its seventh straight goal when Trevor Hills jammed home his 20
th of the season on the man advantage 5:10 into the third period.
Plattsburgh State would finally get on the board just 12 second later as Freshman
Pat Egan set up fellow rookie
Nick Belger for a rip over the glove of Geneseo goaltender Devin McDonald to make the score 7-1.
Finney finished with six saves before
Brady Rouleau came in midway through the second to finish with 17. McDonald ended the night with 42 saves as the Cardinals outshot the Ice Knights 43-30.
Third ranked Plattsburgh State sit at 20-4-3 and will wait until Monday at 10 a.m. for the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey selection show to see if it will receive a bid into this year's NCAA Tournament.
