PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team will open the doors of the Stafford Ice Arena for the Geneseo Ice Knights for the second time in three weeks as the two teams are set to faceoff for the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Saturday night at 7 p.m.
No. 1 seed Plattsburgh State punched its ticket to the SUNYAC Championship after defeating rival and fourth seeded Oswego State, 4-3 in overtime Saturday night. Senior
Michael Radisa was hero as he netted the game-winner 9:51 into the extra period.
Third seed Geneseo had a much more lopsided win as they trounced the two seed Buffalo State 6-1 on the road. The Bengals would actually jump out front with and early 1-0 lead, but the Ice Knights would respond for six-straight goals to silence the home crowd.
The last time these two teams meet in the SUNYAC tournament it was back in 2013 when the two met in the semifinals. Plattsburgh State went on to win that game 5-1 in the Stafford Ice Arena.
This year, Geneseo holds a slight edge in the two regular season matchups going 1-0-1 against the Cardinals.
In the first game on December 5, 2015 in Geneseo, the Ice Knights edged Plattsburgh State 5-4 on a David Ripple goal with just 2:06 remaining. The two teams met again on February 19, 2016, this time in Plattsburgh. The Cardinals and Ice Knights would go back and forth before eventually skating to a 3-3 (OT) tie.
The loss to Geneseo in December was the only loss for the Cardinals in 2015 and marked the only SUNYAC loss all season.
The Cardinals will be led by senior
Dillan Fox who has notched points in the past three games, including two goals in that span. Fox currently sits second on the team in points with 21 on nine goals and 12 assists. Geneseo will be paced by Stephen Collins, who has team-high 21 goals, 23 assists, and 44 points.
In net for the Cardinals will be All-SUNYAC second teamer
Spencer Finney. Finney owns a 13-2-2 record with a .911 save percentage and a 2.24 goal allowed average. Geneseo will counter with All-SUNYAC third teamer Devin McDonald, who went 14-2-5 with a .917 save percentage and a 2.55 goals allowed average.
The winner of Saturday night's game will earn an automatic bid into the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey tournament that will begin March 12.
