Cardinals Run Wild in Home Opener over Norwich, 16-5

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team played its first game at the comforts of the Field House Complex, opening with a 16-5 drumming over the Norwich Cadets.

Norwich would tally the first goal the game, Josh Jenkins beat Cardinals goalie Matt Massaria less than two minutes in to make it 1-0.

From that point on it would be all Cardinals as Plattsburgh State scored the next eight goals to close the first quarter and open the second. Ryan Callahan and Ryan Hubbard would each score two in that span while Matt Renko, Matt Prokesch, Bredndan Damm and Mike Gay would each chip in one. More impressively on those eight goals Damm would figure into seven of those on top of his goal he added six assists.

Jimmy Warden would get a man up goal for Norwich to cut the Cardinal lead to 8-2 early in the second quarter.

Damm would get his second goal of the afternoon before assisting on Callahan's third goal to put Plattsburgh State up 10-2, less than five minutes into the second quarter.

Norwich would score its second-straight on the man advantage when Ryan McCarthy found the back of the net beat freshman goaltender Keith Cakoyanis.

Callahan wasn't done yet, the junior attackman would get his career-high fourth of the game to give the Cardinals an 11-3 lead at halftime.

The second half would be more of the same as the Cardinals outscored the Cadets 5-0 in the third quarter. Mitchell LaBianca would get the run going before Pat Nash recorded back-to-back tallies. Freshman Jake Carroll netted his first collegiate goal as a Cardinal assisting from Nash. Nash would be right back at scoring his hat trick goal and putting Plattsburgh State up 16-3 heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

Norwich would score the only two goals of the fourth quarter to make it 16-5. Michael Cashman and Alex Bowen would each score the first of their 2016 season.

The Cardinals dressed four goalies as each one got a quarter of play. The four netminders combine for five saves on 10 shots on net. Cadets' goalie Ian Kriger made eight saves on 24 shots through the first three period before turning it over to Liam DeBiase for the final stanza.

The Cardinals owned the faceoff circle going 16-24. Senior Joey Kromer went 8-12 while Travis Mauro went 7-10.

Plattsburgh State finished the evening almost perfect on clears going 20-22.

Senior, All-American Damm finished with a career-high seven assists which was just one shy of the program record. It's the first time a Cardinal had seven assists in a game since 2000.

Plattsburgh State gets its first victory 2016 and improves to 1-2. The win also marks the first victory as head coach for Joe May who is in his first year at the helm of the Cardinals. Norwich started its season Wednesday night and falls to 0-1.

The Cardinals will return to action on the road with a Tuesday matinee against North Country rival, Clarkson at 4 p.m.
