WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team traveled to Eastern Connecticut State University Friday afternoon, defeating the Warriors 8-5.
Plattsburgh State dominated the game, jumping out to a 6-1 lead before Eastern Connecticut made it a game late in the fourth.
Plattsburgh State grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the first quarter as
Ryan Callahan and
Mathew Prokesch each notched tallies for the Cardinals.
Eastern Connecticut would cut the lead to 2-1 when Harrison Urda beat Cardinal goalie
Matt Massaria 4:57 into the second quarter.
Plattsburgh State would then go on a 4-0 run, including three straight tallies to close the first half to take grasp of the game.
Seniors
Brendan Damm (2) and
Mitchell LaBianca would account for the three goals to close out the second quarter and give Plattsburgh State a 5-1 advantage heading into the locker room.
Sophomore
Bradley Johnston, who's known for his defense and big hits, joined the offensive rush with 5:22 left in the third quarter, beating Warriors goalie Blake Smaldone to give the Cardinals a 6-1 edge.
Eastern Connecticut would get one back with a man-up goal by Matthew Rougeot with 2:12 left in the third.
Junior
Mike Gay would re-give Plattsburgh State a five-goal lead at 7-2, netting his first of the game with just 49 seconds left in the third period.
In the fourth, Eastern Connecticut would come alive, outscoing Plattsburgh State 3-1. However, it was a little too late. Shawn Tierney and Liam Murphy would score two straight for the Warriors to get back to 7-4 with 5:48 left.
Matt Renko, though would net the dagger with 1:20 left, finishing off a nifty pass from junior
Austin Belz, who split a double to even get the assist off.
Dan Vasquez would get the Warrios to within three at 8-5 after finding the back of the net with 51 seconds left.
Plattsburgh State's
Joey Kromer finished 12-for-17 for the Cardinals on faceoffs, including scooping six ground balls.
Massaria won his third game making 11 saves on 16 shots. Eastern Connecticut's goalie Smaldone also made 11 saves as the Cardinals outshot the Warriors 42-27.
After dropping its first two, Plattsburgh State has now ripped out three straight wins to get to 3-2 overall. Eastern Connecticut played its third of the year, falling to 1-2.
The Cardinals will take a week off before returning to the Field House Lacrosse Complex to host No. 7 Middlebury on Tuesday, March 22 at 4 p.m.
