PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team concluded its regular season on Saturday night against Geneseo, and for the second-straight night the Cardinals skated to a 3-3 draw.
Genenseo would get on the board first converting a power play goal 11:10 into the first period. Matt Solomon would drive a slap shot from the left point past Cardinals goaltender
Spencer Finney.
Eighteen seconds later, the Cardinals would tie it on a quick low wrister from
Jesse Neher, beating Geneseo goalie Devin McDonald.
The Ice Knights would retake the lead at 2-1 just two minutes later on a Plattsburgh State defensive miscue. The Cardinals would turn the puck over in their own zone, leading to a 3-on-0 breakaway. Stephen Collins would keep the puck the whole time, faking a pass to move Finney off the post before roofing it short side.
Again, the Cardinals would come back to tie it at 2-2 right before the end of the first period on the power play. The senior connection of
Dillan Fox and
Connor Gorman would get the Cardinals level as the two broke into the Geneseo zone on a 2-on-1. Fox, carrying the puck, would sauce it over to Gorman for a one-timer, beating a sliding McDonald.
Plattsburgh State would claim its first lead of the night.
Patrick Hermans would net a clapper of his own from the left point with just 27 seconds left in the second period to give the Cardinals a 3-2 advantage heading into the second intermission.
It wouldn't take long for Geneseo to respond in the third period, as it scored just 36 seconds in. Eerily similar to both Solomon and Hermans' goals, from the same left point, Pat Condon would send a slap shot by Finney to make it 3-3.
Neither team would find the back of the net in the final 19:24 of the third or the five minute overtime segment.
Finney made 22 saves for the Cardinals while McDonald made 33 for the Ice Knights as Plattsburgh State outshot Geneseo 36-25.
On the night, the Cardinals finished a perfect 1-for-1 on the power play while Geneseo went 1-for-4.
After a pair of weekend ties, Plattsburgh State still remains in search of win number 20 as it sits at 19-3-3 (12-1-3 SUNYAC). The tie marks Geneseo's sixth on the season and fifth in the conference as it moves to 15-4-6 and 9-2-5 in the SUNYAC.
Headed into the weekend, the Cardinals already clinched the top seed in the SUNYAC Tournament. They find out who they will host on Saturday, February 27 after the SUNYAC quarterfinal round on Wednesday. Saturday's game will mark a Rock the Red night as all fans wearing a red t-shirt will be entered into a raffle for a $50 gift card.
