BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team kept its playoff hopes alive on Friday night with a 69-55 win over the Brockport Golden Eagles.
Both the Cardinals and the Golden Eagles went back and forth for the majority of the first quarter.
Plattsburgh held a slight three point advantage late in the first, but back to back three pointers from Brockport's Hannah Spencer and M Anagnostopulos closed out the quarter and gave the Golden Eagles a 16-13 lead into the second frame.
The Cardinals struggled some in the second quarter, allowing Brockport to gain a seven point advantage.
But the Cardinals fought back on buckets by seniors
Devona Paul and
Allie Taylor. Plattsburgh State trailed only by one point late in the second and with possession, had the opportunity to take the lead heading into halftime. The Cardinals could not convert and as a result Brockport took a 32-29 lead heading into the intermission.
It was more of the same in the third quarter for Plattsburgh, at least through the first eight minutes.
Misha Green hit a three for the Cardinals to open the second half, tying the game at 32.
Brockport went on another run and lead by as many as six. Just like before the Cardinals persevered through the Golden Eagle run and with roughly two minutes to play in the third, it was Green again who hit her third three pointer and drew the game even again 46.
From here it was Cardinal senior
Stephanie Linder who scored the final five points of the third quarter on a three point play and a fast break layup to help Plattsburgh State to a 51-46 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals coasted in the final frame, holding the Golden Eagles to only nine points and extending their lead to 14 points at the final buzzer.
Paul scored a game high 21 points on 13-14 shooting from the foul line, grabbed nine rebounds and swatted five shots.
Linder tallied 10 points on the night, while grabbing six boards and dishing five assists.
Monique Jones had been quiet in the last few games, however had a strong showing when it counted, scoring 11 points, hauling in five rebounds and assisting on five buckets.
In addition, Green finished with 13 points to round out the four Cardinal athletes to finish with double figures in scoring.
With the win, the Cardinals playoff hopes survive. Plattsburgh State will head into Geneseo tomorrow to take on the Knights needing to win, while also hoping the Potsdam Bears can upset the Golden Eagles.
