UTICA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team traveled to central New York to take on the Utica Pioneers Saturday night, ending with an uncommon feeling as the Cardinals fell 4-2.
Plattsburgh State gained an early 1-0 lead over Utica after junior,
Melissa Ames netted her 12
th goal of the season just 1:44 into the first period.
Utica would explode for three unanswered goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
Defensman, Kayla Dion would score her second goal of the season on the power play 5:46 into the middle frame.
Utica's goal leader Morgan Reed would give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead only to be followed by the Pioneers points leader Gabrielle Schnepp finding the back of the net with 1:38 left in the second.
Trailing by two goals in the third period, Jordan Lispon would cut Utica's lead to 3-2 converting on a power play goal of her own.
Coming out of a timeout and lifting the goalie to go 6-on-3, the Cardinals would go all in for the equalizing goal but come up short as Dion would score her second of the game via the empty net.

Camille Leonard suffered her first defeat making 18 saves on 21 shots. The hero of the game would be Utica's goalie Keira Goin who corralled 55 saves on 57 shots as the Cardinals outshot the Pioneers 57-22.
With the loss, Utica snapped the Cardinals 33 game win-streak, which was the longest in Plattsburgh State history. Plattsburgh State went 376 days in between losses.
The Cardinals slip to 22-1-0 and suffer their first ECAC West loss (15-1-0). Utica improves to 16-5-1 and 12-2-1 in the ECAC West.
Plattsburgh State will look to correct the ship as the Cardinals and Pioneers will wrap up their weekend series Sunday at 3 p.m.
