PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The nationally-regard Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team slipped, 5-4, against No. 9 SUNY Geneseo in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena Friday night. The Cardinals, who are receiving votes toward this week's U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll, move to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the league, while the Knights, a national semifinalist in last year's NCAA Tournament, improve to 8-2-1 and 4-2.

Pat Egan (Rochester, N.Y./Lone Star Brahmas) and freshman
Gavin Yates (Plymouth, Mass./South Shore Kings) both had one goal and one assist, with Yates netting his first as a collegian. Junior
Ayrton Valente (Woodbridge, Ontario/Mississauga Chargers) and freshman
Schuyler Seyfert (Marshfield, Wis./Ogden Mustangs) also scored. Freshman
Joshua Davies (Guelph, Ontario/Brooks Bandits) stopped 27 shots in his fourth career start.
Geneseo freshman Conlon Keenan chipped in one goal and one assist, while seniors Connor Anthoine and Jack Ceglarski, sophomore Anthony Marra and freshman Andrew Romano each had one goal. Senior Stephen Collins provided three assists and freshman David Szmyd dished two helpers. Sophomore Devin McDonald collected 22 saves for the win.
The Knights controlled much of the play in the opening period, pumping in two goals on 11 shots. Keenan potted a power-play marker five minutes in after tucking in a low shot inside the right post. Marra then stretched the lead to 2-0 with a left-side tally at 10:55. Davies later came up with a big glove save on sophomore Zach Lynes' point-blank shot with 1:30 remaining in the stanza.
The second period saw a five-goal flurry on 25 combined shots. Valente took a tape-to-tape pass from sophomore
Nick Belger (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Soo Eagles) and buried a shot inside the left post at 2:04. The Cardinals deposited the equalizer just 28 seconds later after freshman
Brady Pfaff (South Riding, Va./Islanders Hockey Club) fed a backhanded pass to Seyfert, who snapped a wrister past McDonald. Anthoine put Geneseo back on top, 3-2, when his slapshot through traffic clanged off the right post and in at 10:09. Egan's right-circle shot found the back of the net with 59 seconds to go to tie, but Romano countered with a power-play goal with 17 seconds remaining as the Knights took a 4-3 lead after two periods.
In the final stanza, Ceglarski's man-advantage tally at 10:16 gave Geneseo a 5-3 lead, but Yates buried a power-play goal of his own at 13:57 to make the score 5-4. With an empty net and a man advantage following a Geneseo penalty with 1:22 remaining, Plattsburgh State sent one shot on net before Belger caromed a shot off the left post with 20 seconds to go. Charles Barber's (Queensbury, N.Y./New York Bobcats) slapshot was blocked by a diving Romano to ice the game for the visitors.
Plattsburgh State closes its first semester of games tomorrow at 4 p.m. against the College at Brockport.
