Men’s Hockey Ends First Semester with Loss to Brockport

College Hockey Stats Box Score

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The nationally-regarded Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team ended its first semester with a 2-0 loss against the College at Brockport in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena on Saturday. Plattsburgh State, which is receiving votes in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll, ends the first semester at 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the league, while the Golden Eagles are 5-6-1 and 4-5.

Plattsburgh State sophomore Cam Owens (Wilmington, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) was 9-of-15 on faceoffs, while freshmen Antoine Desnoyers (Quebec City, Quebec/Cegep Champlain St. Lawrence) and Schuyler Seyfert (Marshfield, Wis./Ogden Mustangs) both won six draws. Freshman Joshua Davies (Guelph, Ontario/Brooks Bandits) collected 24 saves.

Brockport won its first-ever game at Plattsburgh State, ending a drought that began when the Golden Eagles first visited Plattsburgh on Nov. 19, 1977. Junior Dylan Shapiro and freshman Hunter Laslo both scored with sophomore Tim Kielich providing an assist. Freshman Matt Schneider turned in a 36-save shutout for his first career clean sheet.

The Golden Eagles led 1-0 on 12 shots in the first period. Right off the opening faceoff, Brockport senior Jake Taylor picked up a neutral zone turnover and snapped a low wrister that was gobbled up by Davies. Freshman Chris Pollini then slapped a right side shot that was swatted away. The visitors broke through at 13:27 as Kielich's pass from the right corner went through a Cardinal defender's legs and up to Shapiro, whose slot shot went into the upper right corner of the net. With 2:02 remaining, Plattsburgh State junior Matt Quilty (Midland, Ontario/Caledonia Corvairs) was robbed by Schneider's blocker on a low right side bid.

Both teams skated to a scoreless second period, with the hosts owning a 13-8 shot advantage in the stanza. Plattsburgh State sent a trio of shots on Schneider eight minutes in, including a pair of close-in chances by freshman Gavin Yates (Plymouth, Mass./South Shore Kings). Schneider would later kick out freshman Philip Middleton's (Vail, Colo./Salmon Arm Silverbacks) point slapshot. Davies came up with a tough stop of his own as he denied Kielich on a blocker save with just under 20 seconds remaining.

Plattsburgh State continued its offensive pressure, churning out 15 third-period shots. Just 3:05 into the frame, Schneider flashed the glove to stifle sophomore Jesse Neher's (Calgary, Alberta/Cowichen Valley Capitals) point-blank shot on the right post. Middleton then tried again at 13:15 with a slapshot, but the puck caromed off Schneider's blocker and fluttered over the net. Davies was pulled for the extra attacker with 1:19 left, and Cardinal sophomore Nick Belger (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Soo Eagles) nearly netted the equalizer but his snapshot clanged off the crossbar with 1:04 to go. Laslo sealed the Brockport win with an empty netter with 35 seconds to go.

With its first semester of games completed, Plattsburgh State breaks until hosting the W.B. Mason Winter Classic, beginning Friday, Dec. 30. The Cardinals play Wesleyan (Conn.) University at 7 p.m. on the opening day. Castleton University and Neumann University battle at 4 p.m. The consolation and championship games are scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m. the following day.
