PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Sophomore forward
Alex Price (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) scored with 1:02 left in regulation to help the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team tie SUNY New Paltz, 1-1, in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Field House Soccer Complex in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.
With the Cardinals down 1-0 late, senior defender
Tyler Jablanski (Niverville, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) played in a long ball into the top of the 18-yard box from the midfield. Senior forward
Chris Bowden (Commack, N.Y./Commack) leaped up and got a piece of the ball, redirecting it into a scrum in the 18-yard box. After the ball incidentally glanced off a defender, Price tapped in a right-footed strike from 10 yards out to tie the score at 1-all. Neither team was able to find the back of the net down the stretch, and the two sides settled for a 1-1 tie.
Plattsburgh State moves to 9-3-1 overall (2-2-1 SUNYAC) with the result and next visits Buffalo State on Friday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m. New Paltz moves to 5-3-6 (1-3-2 SUNYAC) and next visits SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m.
After 82 minutes of scoreless action, the Hawks finally put a goal on the board in the 83rd minute. Senior midfielder Sam Spring tapped a pass to sophomore midfielder Manny Flory, who then sent in a cross from the left side to freshman forward Luke Dole. Dole headed the ball inside the near post to give New Paltz a 1-0 advantage.
Senior forward
Alexis Archilla (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) nearly scored in the second minute of the first overtime period, as he entered the 18-yard box from the left wing, used a spin move and nifty footwork to gain clearance from the defenders and then ripped a shot from 15 yards out that was turned away by junior goalkeeper John Guzzo.
Plattsburgh State received another opportunity to end the game in the 97th minute, as a New Paltz defender stripped Archilla of the ball, only to knock it to a charging freshman forward
Sean Cray (Modena, N.Y./Wallkill), whose shot attempt was batted away by Guzzo.
The Cardinals were able to force overtime due in part to a missed penalty kick by New Paltz in the 76th minute, as senior midfielder Charlie Versen sent the penalty-kick try high over the crossbar.
The Cardinals doubled up the Hawks in shots, 20-10, with Plattsburgh State holding an 8-1 margin in the two overtime periods. New Paltz did, however, outgain Plattsburgh State in corner kicks, 4-2.
Archilla took four shots, two of which were on goal, to pace the Cardinal attack, while Versen fired off four shots (two on goal) coming off the bench for New Paltz.
Junior goalkeeper
Andrew LaClaustra (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) made four saves in between the posts for Plattsburgh State, while his counterpart, Guzzo, made eight stops.
