Cardinals Fall in 2OT to Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team fell short in a 2-1 double overtime loss to the Brockport Golden Eagles on Friday afternoon.

Weather conditions certainly played a factor, as the field conditions became sloppy and muddy, effecting the style of play on the pitch.

The Golden Eagles were the first to strike on Friday. Kaitlyn Niedermeier gave Brockport the lead when a scramble in front of the Cardinal net resulted in Niedermeier being able to put the ball away in the 43' minute. Brockport held a 1-0 advantage at halftime.

It was the Cardinals turn in the second half of play. Junior midfielder Madeline Saccocio (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) found the back of the net in the 69' minute with her team leading 12th goal of the season.

Despite the momentum shift after scoring, the Cardinals struggled to find the back of the net again.

Eventually entering double overtime, the Golden Eagles capitalized on a corner kick that caused a scramble in front of the Cardinal net, and after a shot or two, Serena Sauerwald punched home the game winning goal in the 117' for Brockport.

Cardinal goalies Nichole Gibson (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport) and Taylor Adams (Schenectady, N.Y./Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) split time in net, with Adams making five saves.

Plattsburgh State is now 10-7 overall this season, and fall to 5-3 in the SUNYAC conference. The Cardinals will play the last game of the regular season tomorrow in Geneseo against the Knights. The Cardinals have clinched a playoff spot, but it is yet to be determined what seed they will land.
