PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team helped itself in the race to qualify for the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament Friday afternoon at the Field House Soccer Complex, as the Cardinals edged The College at Brockport, 1-0, in SUNYAC action.
Senior forward
Alexis Archilla (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) netted the game's only goal in the 30th minute. Freshman goalkeeper
Patrick Feeley (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) played a ball in on a long set piece, which deflected forward toward the Cardinals' goal off the head of a Brockport defender. Archilla picked up the ball from inside the 18-yard box and fired a right-footed strike past the Golden Eagle goalkeeper to give the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage. That score would stand up the rest of the way, as Plattsburgh State hung on for the win.
Plattsburgh State rises to 10-5-1 overall (3-4-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next hosts SUNY Geneseo tomorrow at 1 p.m. on Senior Day. With SUNY New Paltz and SUNY Potsdam both winning, the Cardinals remain tied for seventh with Potsdam in the SUNYAC standings, just one point behind New Paltz for the sixth and final spot into the SUNYAC Tournament. Brockport dropped to 2-10-2 overall (1-6-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and closes out its season tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Potsdam.
After a first half in which both teams combined for just eight shots, each side took eight shots in the second, including several near misses for the Golden Eagles. Brockport nearly scored off a long set piece from the midfield in the 83rd minute, as sophomore midfielder Quintin Volpe fired a ball that Feeley punched out of the air falling backward, keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of the home team.
Plattsburgh State finished with a 13-11 edge in shots, while Brockport outgained the Cardinals in corner kicks, 10-8.
Archilla paced the Cardinal attack with four shots (three on goal), while Volpe led Brockport with four shots (one on goal).
