FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Cardinals overcame a slow start on Saturday afternoon and made key plays down the stretch to top the Fredonia Blue Devils in a 69-65 decision.
With roughly three minutes left in regulation Plattsburgh State guard
Allie Taylor stole the ball from the Blue Devils and hit a fast break layup to put the Cardinals up 60-59. From here it was a tight back and forth affair entering crunch time.
The Blue Devils responded with a bucket of their own to make it a 61-60 contest before
Devona Paul hit a midrange jumper to put the Cardinals back on top.
A Fredonia turnover then gave Taylor a transition bucket and put the Cardinals up three.
Fredonia converted two more buckets and both teams hit a free throw before Taylor sunk a two pointer with under a minute remaining which put Plattsburgh State on top 67-65.
The Blue Devils couldn't convert on their next possession and
Stephanie Linder's jumper with 13 seconds remaining put the game out of reach and sealed the Cardinal victory over the Fredonia Blue Devils.
Paul and Taylor paced the Cardinals, who saw four players hit the double figure scoring margin. The seniors finished with 22 and 21 points respectively, while Linder added 11 points and
Monique Jones tallied 10.
Paul also grabbed 16 rebounds to complete the double-double effort.
Having defeated the Buffalo State Bengals on Friday, the Cardinals come out of the weekend with a much needed 2-0 record.
Plattsburgh State is now at a 11-7 overall record, and finds itself at 5-6 in SUNYAC play. Fredonia slips to 13-6 and 8-4 in conference.
The Cardinals will return home on Friday to welcome the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons to Memorial Hall at 5:30 p.m.
