CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team improved to 2-0 with a 2-0 win against the Hobart Statesmen (1-1) Saturday afternoon as part of the SUNY Potsdam College Cup.
Alexis Archilla got the Cards on the board mid way through the first half when
Fabian Chaparro sent a ball to the Hobart defense, only to be stripped by Archilla who then had a one on one opportunity with Statesmen goalie Tyler Serafine. Archilla sent a shot low far post past Serafine who stretched near post in an attempt to keep the Cardinals off the board.
The Plattsburgh defense had its hands full as the Statesmen amassed six corner kicks in the first half, but could not convert on the offensive end. Both teams battled back and forth, however it was the Cardinals who led in shots seven to three at the break. All in all Plattsburgh held an 11-8 advantage in shots.
Chaparro gave the Cardinals an insurance goal at the 70 minute mark when he received the ball in the mid field and carried it up through the Hobart defense. A nice inside cut gave Chaparro enough space for a beautiful shot that hit the upper corner of the net just over a diving Serafine.
Plattsburgh goalie
Mitchell Jordon only need to make two saves in helping the Cards earn their first clean sheet of the season.
The Cardinals next match will take place Sunday in the second day of the SUNY Potsdam College Cup against SUNY Purchase. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
