Cardinals’ Five-Set Comeback Victory over Potsdam Highlights Part of SUNYAC Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. It was a day of many emotions for the Plattsburgh State volleyball team as it split two matches; one a thrilling five-set victory and the other a straight set defeat as it closed out the first weekend of SUNYAC pool play at the Sports Arena on the campus of Buffalo State on Saturday.

Plattsburgh State's record now sits at 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC.

MATCH ONE – Plattsburgh State 3, SUNY Potsdam 2 (17-25, 25-22, 21-25, 27-25, 15-9)

After getting out to a sluggish start and dropping the first set, the Cardinals quickly jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the second. That lead would quickly be cut though, as Potsdam rattled off the next five points to cut it to a two-point deficit.

Plattsburgh State grabbed the lead at 16-15 and never relinquished it, winning a back and forth point battle to tie matters up at one set apiece.

The third set was much like the first in that the Cardinals started out flat, dropping five out of the first six points. The Bears would allow the Cardinals to get closer, but would hold on to take a two set to one lead.

Both teams traded points for the majority of the fourth set until Potsdam rallied with four straight points to take a 24-20 lead and held four match points against the Cardinals.

With their backs against the wall, Plattsburgh State managed to turn those aside to tie the set at 24-24. After dropping the next point and facing another match point, the Cardinals would end up scoring the next three points to take the set and force a fifth and deciding set.

Holding all of the momentum, Plattsburgh State tallied seven of the first eight points in the final set, and from there cruised to a 15-9 win, completing the comeback.

Leading the Cardinals on the offensive side were freshmen Sam Colombo and Izzy Ruff, amassing 17 and 15 kills respectively. Colombo also collected a team-high 18 digs. Freshman Sydney Gabriel tied for a game-high 40 assists in the victory.

MATCH TWO – Fredonia State 3, Plattsburgh State 0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-14)

The Blue Devils held Plattsburgh State's attack percentage to just .047 while they hit at a .373 clip, winning in straight sets.

Fredonia State's offensive production was spread out, as three Blue Devils each had seven kills to lead the attack.

For the Cardinals, Melissa Wickers finished with a team-high 6 kills while Jordynne Ales collected 16 digs.

The Blue Devils scored 10 points on service aces, four by way of Jess DiChristopher. Lauren Hokaj came up with 16 digs and Kelly Edinger finished with a game-high 30 assists.

SUNYAC pool play will shift to Plattsburgh in two weeks' time. The Cardinals' next matches, however, will be next weekend at the SUNY Poly Wildcat Weekend Invite in Utica, N.Y. Plattsburgh State will face off against Skidmore on Friday at 7 p.m.
