Box Score UTICA, N.Y. – Having dropped six of its last seven matches entering weekend play at SUNY Poly, the Plattsburgh State volleyball team gained some momentum on Friday night by taking down Skidmore College by a score of 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-22).
With the victory, the Cardinals pull back to within a game of .500 at 7-8 while Skidmore falls to 5-12 on the season.
Freshman
Sam Colombo effectively contributed on both offense and defense for Plattsburgh State, leading the squad with 14 kills and finishing second with 17 digs.
The Cardinals got off to a slow start on the offensive end, with attack percentages of just .156 in the first set and .081 in the second. Despite the low mark, Plattsburgh State won the second set due in large part to the Thoroughbreds' mark of just .045 to go along with 10 attack errors.
Plattsburgh State rolled in the third set, upping the attack percentage to .308 while only committing three errors. In the fourth, it was the Cardinals who edged out Skidmore in despite having a less kills and a lower attack percentage.
In addition to Colombo's excellent all-around effort, Plattsburgh State also got a double-digit kill contribution from freshman
Izzy Ruff (12).
Jordynne Ales collected a game-high 22 digs, while
Evelyn Vicencio added 11 of her own.
Sydney Gabriel led the way with 38 assists for the Cardinals.
The Thoroughbreds were led by Allie Dillon and Caite Canfield, each of whom amassed 14 kills. Marcela Familiar had 20 digs, and Bailey Hutchins helped with 22 assists.
Plattsburgh State will wrap up its final two matches in Utica Saturday by facing off against hosts SUNY Poly at 11 a.m., before taking on St. John Fisher at 1 p.m.
