Cardinals Draw Even with Bears in Double OT

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – In their first SUNYAC game of the season, the Plattsburgh State Men's soccer team (8-1-1) finished even with North Country rival, the SUNY Potsdam Bears (6-2-1) on Saturday. The double overtime contest saw a lot of action that could have put either team in a position to win, however the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Bears got on the board early when a penalty kick was called against Plattsburgh State in the 12th minute. Potsdam midfielder Tom Benedetto took the penalty shot and put the ball just out of reach of Cardinal goalie Mitchell Jordon.

Twelve minutes later, Plattsburgh State found an opportunity to even the score. On what seemed like a dead play, forward Nicholas Laurent outran a Potsdam defender to the corner flag and made a sliding goal line save to keep the ball inbounds. Now on the attack, Laurent sent a cross into the 18 yard box that found a deflection off of teammate Ethan Votraw. Cardinal forward Alexis Archilla crashed the net and was able to beat Bears goalie Jesse Kohler to the ball. Archilla had a nice touch past the Bears keeper that knotted the game at one. The 24th minute goal was Archilla's seventh of the season.

Both the Cardinals and Bears battled through the rest of regulation and two overtimes unable to convert on the offensive end. Plattsburgh State held a slight advantage in corner kicks (6-5), and a major advantage in shots (17-8).

The Cardinals will continue SUNYAC play on Friday, October 2nd when they host SUNY Cortland at 3 p.m.
