Saints Hand Cardinals First Loss of Season

CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team had an eight game win streak come to an end on Wednesday in a 1-0 loss to the St. Lawrence Saints at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Cardinals had started the 2015 season perfect to this point, however a late goal by St. Lawrence handed Plattsburgh State its first loss of the season.

Play was physical early on Wednesday. A total of 11 fouls accumulated through the first half. St. Lawrence led in corner kicks 8-6 and had some golden opportunities to strike early.

Cardinal midfielder Nelson Vetter made a tremendous save on a corner kick for the Saints. Teammate and goalie Mitchell Jordon jumped off his line in a failed attempted to clear the service. The ball landed and was hit by a Saint forward, only to be stopped on the goal line by a kick save from Vetter to keep the game scoreless through the first half.

Tapshak Augustine broke the scoreless tie with 12 minutes remaining in regulation and gave the Saints what they needed to win. Teammate Brandon McNamee carried the ball down the far side of the field and into the offensive zone. McNamee send a cross that found the feet of a wide open Augustine in the 18 yard box. Augustine took a touch inside and was able to create room to put a shot left foot past a diving Jordon.

The Saints held a 16-5 advantage in shots over the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh State will look to rebound this weekend when they welcome North Country rival SUNY Potsdam to the Field House Soccer Complex on Saturday at 1 p.m. This match up will mark the start of SUNYAC play for the Cardinals.
