Late Goal by Archilla Lifts Cards over Thoroughbreds

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – It was a back and forth game on Saturday night when the No. 21 ranked Plattsburgh State Cardinals (8-0) hosted the Skidmore Thoroughbreds (3-2) in non-conference action.

Todd Jensen broke the scoreless tie in the 9th minute and put Skidmore on the board first when he nailed a free kick from 25 yards out. Jensen was able to bend a shot around the Plattsburgh wall and sent it near post by Cardinal goalie Mitchell Jordon.

Thirty-two minutes later the Cardinals would even the score. After a foul call on Skidmore, Plattsburgh midfielder Fabian Chaparro sent a free kick across the 18 yard box to Nick Economou who initially trapped the ball with his head, then was able to get a foot on the ball and sent a shot past Thoroughbred goalie Eli Kisselbach. It was Economou's third goal of the season.

This gave the Cardinals momentum heading into the break knotted at one goal each.

Both teams seemed to struggle offensively throughout the match. Skidmore led in shots 8-7, while both teams only had two corner kicks each.

It was a very physical match as well. A total of seven yellow cards were given out between both teams, with Plattsburgh receiving three and Skidmore four.

Tied at one goal each, it was Alexia Archilla who found the back of the net to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead with six minutes remaining in regulation. Archilla received a pass and beat his defender through the 18 yard box. Kisselbach came off his line, but Archilla was able to send a shot low far post for the game winner. Archilla leads the team in goals with six on the season.

The Cardinals will head to St. Lawrence University on Wednesday to take on the Saints before they head into SUNYAC play.
