Cardinals Suffer First SUNYAC Loss Thanks to Late Oneonta Score

ONEONTA, N.Y. – It took the better part of the afternoon for the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team to overcome an initial two-goal deficit at Oneonta State, and just as it looked as though the teams would be headed to overtime the Red Dragons' Nathan Doody slung in his second goal of the game with 10 seconds remaining, sending the Cardinals to an 11-10 loss at All College Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Coming off a game where he starred as the primary scoring threat, senior James Read found himself recast in a different role and dished out a game and career-best five assists, the last of which came on the Cardinals' game-tying, man-up score by Austin Belz with 5:52 to go in regulation.

Senior Jack Felter blasted a game-high three goals past Oneonta's Ryan Adler in the loss which dropped Plattsburgh State to 9-4 and 2-1 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. Oneonta State pushed its record back to .500 (5-5) and currently sits in second place in the league standings with a 2-1 mark.

The loss was certainly not due to the impressive efforts of Joey Kromer in the faceoff circle. The junior out of Clifton Park, N.Y., held serve in that area by winning 18 of the 25 draws and scraping up a game-best 12 ground balls.

For just the second time in its 2015 campaign, the Cardinals were held without a goal through the initial 15 minutes of play. Alec Solomito and Mike Metzger notched scored for the Red Dragons which put Plattsburgh State at a 2-0 disadvantage heading to the second quarter.

Spurred on by a number of well-timed attack runs, Plattsburgh State battled back to tie things up in the first 7:46 of the second stanza. Junior Brendan Damm solved Adler for the first time when the Montauk, N.Y., product ripped a man-up score past the Red Dragons' netminder. Damm's 30th score of the season was the opening salvo of a 3-1 surge by the visitors.

After another Oneonta score, Belz and Mitchell LaBianca answered with back-to-back scores to knot matters at three.

Dueling back and forth, the competitors traded 2-0 spurts and after scores from Ryan Hubbard and Felter, the Cardinals had successfully retied things at five each with 1:05 to go before the halftime horn sounded.

Thanks to Connor Coyle, Oneonta State would head into the 10-minute strategy session with a lead. His unassisted marker with 25 ticks left served as the first of two unanswered scores which spanned the second and third quarters.

Down 7-5 with 9:18 remaining in the third, Felter notched his second of the game but two Oneonta scores by Devon Casey and Doody still left the Cardinals trailing, 9-7, headed to the last 15 minutes of action.

Pouncing on some Oneonta penalties in the fourth, the Cardinals went on a 3-1 run to tie the game. Ryan Callahan opened the fourth quarter scoring with his sixth of 2015 and after a Charles Montgomery score for the Red Dragons, Felter scored before Belz added Plattsburgh State's third man-up tally of the day to knot matters at 10.

Doody's goal, though, broke the Cardinals' hearts as he beat Austin Graham in the closing seconds. Matt Massaria (9-4) took the loss for Plattsburgh State while Adler stopped 12 shots for the Red Dragons.

In order to get back on the winning track, the Cardinals will have to contend with arguably their toughest opponent of 2015 when No. 13-ranked SUNY Cortland pays a visit to the Field House Lacrosse Complex on Saturday afternoon. That day also marks the Cardinals' senior day and prior to the start of the 1 p.m. match, Plattsburgh State will honor the contributions of its 11 seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
