Men's Lacrosse Can't Overcome #13 Cortland's Fast Start in Senior Day Loss

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – A late scoring surge by the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team in the fourth was not enough to overcome a deficit of as many as 10 goals as the Cardinals fell to No. 13-ranked SUNY Cortland 15-9 at the Field House Lacrosse Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The senior day game, which saw the Cardinals honor the contributions of their 11-member senior class, saw Cortland pile up the first eight goals and dropped Plattsburgh State's 2015 mark to 9-5 and 2-2 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) confrontations.

SUNY Cortland registered 50 shots and scooped up 36 ground balls compared to the Cardinals' 31 to move to 8-4 and 3-0 in conference play.

Brendan Damm finished with a team-high four points on two goals and two assists while Jack Felter contributed two scores and a helper of his own to the Cardinals' final tally. Final-year man Cole Andersen pumped in a pair of fourth-quarter goals for the Cardinals, too.

Benjamin Dunlavey netted three goals while Mike Cantelli added two more in the first quarter which saw the Red Dragons open up a 6-0 lead. Six SUNY Cortland players notched at least one point during the opening 15 minutes of action.

Two more scores by the Red Dragons in the first 47 seconds of the second stanza pushed the Cardinals' deficit to 8-0 before freshman long stick midfielder Andrew Sofroniou broke up the shutout with an end-to-end unassisted scoring strike with 13:57 to go in the quarter.

Billy Davis and T.J. deLyra pushed the Red Dragons' edge to 10-1 with goals of their own after Sofroniou's marker.

The first of three Plattsburgh State man-up scores came off the stick of Felter. Ryan Callahan found the senior wide open near the Red Dragons' net with 8:30 remaining in the second. Felter notched his assist shortly thereafter when he made a sweet dish to freshman Ryan Hubbard who beat netminder Scott Tota to make the score 10-3.

Zach Hopps and Matt Rakoczy fired in goals in the last 2:37 of the frame to make the score 12-3.

The third quarter was a far more defensive period than any of the four on the day. Callahan and Damm trimmed Plattsburgh State's deficit to 12-5 with man-up rips, but Dunlavey registered his fourth of the game before the quarter came to an end.

Cortland increased its lead to 10 (15-5) with two more scores in the fourth, but the Cardinals' offense came fast and furious in the final 4:13 of the frame to narrow the gap considerably. Goals by Felter and Damm bookended Andersen's two scores to account for the final tally.

Matt Massaria suffered the loss (9-5) and made 14 saves in 54:28 of action. Tota emerged as the winner and turned aside 11 shots on net.

The Cardinals' home stand is set to continue on Wednesday night when Plattsburgh State hosts North Country rival Clarkson University under the lights at 7 p.m.
