UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Although Plattsburgh State's Jack Felter was one of the few members of the lacrosse squad who didn't come make a return to his boyhood stomping grounds when the Cardinals made their weekend trip to Long Island, he made sure that his latest journey to the Island wouldn't be one to forget.
A senior out of Binghamton, N.Y., Felter almost outscored Widener University by himself, pumping in a game and career-best six goals to propel the Cardinals to a 16-7 triumph over the Pride at Mitchel Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon.
One of Felter's scores was of the man-up variety and was only a part of what turned out to be an excellent day for the Cardinals in the particular statistical category. Plattsburgh State finished 5-for-10 on the man advantage to help level its 2015 mark at 2-2.
Shots were another figure in which the Cardinals enjoyed a marked advantage as they took 53 compared to just 25 by Widener who remains winless with a record of 0-4.
At no point through the course of the 60-minute non-conference skirmish did the Cardinals find themselves behind on the scoreboard. First-year man Ryan Hubbard gave Plattsburgh State a lead it would never relinquish 7:11 into the opening stanza when the Aquebogue, N.Y., product fired in a slick shot.
Hubbard played a part in the Cardinals' second score of the sunny afternoon, too, as he set up Felter's first of the day which occurred with 6:22 to go in the first frame. Junior Brendan Damm rounded out the trio of Plattsburgh State scores in the first by breaking free from a Widener defense which was obsessed with limiting the damage dealt by the 2014 All-American.
The Pride trimmed Plattsburgh State's lead to just two a little over six minutes into the second period when Chris Sanchez directed a ball past Cardinals' netminder Matt Massaria. Instead of allowing Widener to build off that momentum, the Cardinals quickly squashed the threat presented by the Pride by ripping in four goals over a span of 4:10.
Nick DeCeglia struck for a man-up tally before Mitch LaBianca weaved through the Pride's defense and deposited a ball into the top-right corner. It was LaBianca's second goal in as many games. Another Felter-from-Hubbard connection was followed by James Read's only goal of the bout to make matters 7-1 Cardinals.
Instead of withering away, the Pride banded together and almost completed a comeback. Tyler Schulte blasted two scores past Massaria and Marc LaVine added another in the last 3:03 of the half, bringing Widener within 7-4 before Felter stopped the bleeding with his third of the day as four seconds remained in the half.
Undeterred by Felter's high-scoring ways, the Pride continued to make the most of its limited shot opportunities well into the third period. Nick Striebich and Matt Natale cut the Cardinals' lead to 8-6 with one goal each in the first 2:54 of the third.
With their once comfortable lead dwindling at a rapid pace, the Cardinals looked to Felter and Damm to right the ship. The pair did just that, scoring five of the six third period goals recorded by the Cardinals. All of the scores took place in the last 9:09 of the quarter. Freshman long-stick middlefielder Andrew Sofroniou added a goal, too, on a splendid attacking run in which he torched most of the Pride's players before completing his coast-to-coast job with a big-time rip.
Heading into the last frame up 14-6, Plattsburgh State picked up two more scores in the last frame. Austin Belz put in an unassisted marker before sophomore Collin Cunningham sent a one-hopper past backup Widener netminder Tyler McClary for his first tally of 2015. Brian Headrick assisted on Cunningham's score and picked up his first point as a collegian.
Joey Kromer and Matt Renko each hustled down seven ground balls for the Cardinals while four members of the team enjoyed multi-point games. Aside from Felter, Damm added three points while Hubbard and Read tallied four apiece.
Strong between the pipes once again, Massaria improved to 2-2 by making nine saves. Chris Treat (0-4) took the loss for the Pride in a 13-save effort. LaVine and Striebich each racked up three points for Widener.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Cardinals will come home to roost for the first time in 2015. Plattsburgh State is scheduled to do battle with non-conference rival Morrisville State at 3 p.m. from the Field House Lacrosse Complex.Â
