PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Fresh off a six-goal performance against Widener in Uniondale, N.Y., during his last outing, Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse senior Jack Felter decided to give the Cardinals' home crowd something to cheer about, too.
Making his first home appearance of 2015, the Binghamton, N.Y., native dazzled once again by amassing six goals for the second straight game as Plattsburgh State took it to Morrisville, 13-5, at the Field House Lacrosse Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Other multi-point players for the Cardinals included reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week James Read (two goals, two assist) and junior attacker Brendan Damm (two goals, two assists). That trio provided the majority of Plattsburgh State's offensive punch and helped the Cardinals rise to 3-2 in 2015 while sending the Mustangs' record to 1-2.
In their latest triumph, the Cardinals enjoyed a 48-23 advantage in the shot department and went 1-for-2 on the man advantage. Junior goalie Matt Massaria, who scored SUNYAC Goalie of the Week honors on Monday, stopped nine shots in 52:05 of action to up his record to 3-2.
Felter got things started for the home team just 48 seconds into the non-conference battle, taking a pass from Austin Belz and ripping his first score of the day past Morrisville backstop Chris Fiore.
The Mustangs tied things up for the only time when Eliud Evans beat Massaria high 2:56 into things. For the vast majority of the opening stanza, though, it was all Plattsburgh State. After Evans' score knotted matters at one, the Cardinals jammed in the next four scores. Mike Gay and Andrew Tralongo scored one each before Read added Plattsburgh State's sole man-up tally of the afternoon.
Felter concluded the 4-0 scoring spree with his second of the day off an assist from Read which put the home squad up 5-1 with 6:32 remaining in the first quarter.
Richie Fisher drew the Mustangs within three by netting Morrisville's second of the day with five seconds left in the first.
Read upped the Cardinals' edge to 6-2 early on in the second, finishing off a coast-to-coast attack run with his second of the game 2:49 into the frame.
Felter lit up the Plattsburgh State scoreboard twice more in the second, but Louie Geswaldo and John Sherlock added goals for the Mustangs to put the halftime score at 8-4 Cardinals.
Morrisville kept the pressure up early in the third when Evans' second of the game made the score 8-5, but a 5-0 offensive blitz by Plattsburgh State closed things out and corralled the Mustangs for good. Felter scored his fifth and sixth during the spree while Ryan Hubbard added one.
Damm reached a major personal milestone late in the fourth when his second goal of the game accounted for the Cardinals' 13
th score. With that goal, Damm reached the 100-career goal plateau.
Aside from Evans, Sherlock was the only other Mustang to record more than one point as he had one goal and an assist. Fiore made 16 stops in the loss.
With their first home win of 2015 a matter of record, the Cardinals will not return to the Field House Lacrosse Complex until the calendar rolls over to April. Each of Plattsburgh State's next six tilts will either occur on the road or at a neutral site beginning with a Saturday date with Eastern Connecticut University. That tussle is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. on the campus of Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Conn.
