PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (MARCH 7, 2015) – The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team finished the regular season as 2014-15 regular season champions beating out Oswego State by one point and then Saturday defeated the Lakers by one goal, 2-1, to become the 2015 SUNYAC Champions.
The games intensity started out high but the scoring did not, as the first 20 minutes didn't solve anything with neither team finding the back of the net.
However, the second period would feature all the fireworks as all three goals happened in the middle frame.
First was Connor Toomey tipping home a Brandon Beadow shot from the point on the power play to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The lead wouldn't last long as Oswego scored on a rebound goal to tie things back up. Morgan Bonner would collect the puck off an initial shot by Krystian Yorke.
As time was winding down Connor Gorman would recapture the lead for the Cardinals making it 2-1. Gorman was setup by Toomey who sent a perfect cross slot pass to Gorman for the one-timer.
With five shots in the third period, Oswego State was unable to find a second equalizer.
Cardinal goaltender Brady Rouleau finished the night with 17 saves on 18 shots while Oswego State goalie Matt Zawadzki finished with 22 saves on 24 attempts.
Zawadzki, Brandon Adams and Stephen Johnson were announced to the SUNYAC All-Tournament team for the Lakers while Connor Gorman, Brandon Beadow and tournament MVP Connor Toomey rounded out the team for the Cardinals.
This is the Cardinals league-high 22 SUNYAC Championship. The last time the Cardinals hoisted the trophy was in 2012 when they beat these very Lakers.
With the win Plattsburgh State moved to 20-5-2 on the season and claimed an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Tournament. The NCAA selection show is Monday at 10:30 when the Cardinals will find out where and when they will be playing.
