Felter Takes Control for Cardinals in 10-6 Victory at Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Taking part in his final State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener, Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse senior notched five goals to lead the Cardinals in a 10-6 triumph over The College at Brockport at Kenny Shriver Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Felter, who hails from Binghamton, N.Y., led the charge in the Cardinals' scoring attack while Mike Gay blasted in a pair of goals of his own as Plattsburgh State improved to 7-3 and 1-0 in SUNYAC play. The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, drop to 4-5 and 0-1 in conference play.

For all but 2:57, Plattsburgh State maintained the lead in the SUNYAC opener for both clubs and after Clifton Jackson began the scoring 1:36 in, Felter netted his first of the day off a pretty feed from Austin Belz to knot the score at one apiece.

That got the Cardinals' offense humming and after a score from Gay and Ryan Hubbard's tally from Brendan Damm the visitors opened up a 3-1 edge on their western New York rivals.

Brockport responded with a pair of goals through the final 5:20 of the first quarter which sent the teams to the short intermission knotted at three each.

It didn't take too long for the Cardinals to maneuver back on top as Damm gave the visitors a lead they would never surrender with a score off an assist from Matt Renko 1:59 into the second frame. Gay and Felter would each sling in another in the next 6:10 to push the Plattsburgh State lead to 6-3.

The Golden Eagles put a scare into the Cardinals when John Countryman and Casey Cleary found the back of the net in the final 4:25 of the second to pull within 6-5 heading to the halftime break.

James Read figured into exactly 100-percent of the offense in the third quarter when the senior ripped in an unassisted goal with 10:16 remaining in the 15-minute stanza.

From there, Felter took center stage in the fourth by racking up three consecutive scores in the first 8:44 of the final quarter to put the Plattsburgh State win on ice. Marcus Palvino registered a man-up tally with 1:43 to go, but the Golden Eagles pulled no closer thanks to another splendid effort between the pipes from Matt Massaria. The junior stopped 12 shots in the win and moves his record to 7-3.

A multitude of infraction by the Golden Eagles allowed the Cardinals to gain a whopping 11 attempts on the man advantage. For the game, Plattsburgh State finished 3-for-11 while playing with an extra man.

Joey Kromer won nine of his 19 face off opportunities and scooped up four ground balls to tie with Andy Krolczyk for the team lead. Brockport outshot the Cardinals 38-31.

One final road game stands between the Cardinals and their return to the Field House Lacrosse Complex. On Wednesday night, Plattsburgh State will pay a visit to North Country nemesis and non-conference foe St. Lawrence University to lock horns with the Saints at 7 p.m.
