CANTON, N.Y. – After making some program history with its first win ever against St. Lawrence last season, the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team came out of the gates eager to up the winning streak against its North Country rivals to two games.
Thanks to a game-high four goals from junior
Brendan Damm and a 4-1 scoring advantage in the final quarter the Cardinals were able to do just that as they handed the Saints an 11-7 non-conference loss at the Turf Field on the campus of SUNY Canton on Wednesday afternoon.
Joey Kromer put on a face-off showcase at midfield, winning 15 of 22 draws and grabbing control of a game-high seven ground balls to help Plattsburgh State improve to 8-3. The Saints, who are receiving votes in the latest USILA NCAA Division III Coaches Poll, slide to 5-5.
Junior
Matt Massaria, who took home the SUNYAC Men's Lacrosse Goalie of the Week award on Monday, made 12 saves in 60 minutes of action between the pipes.
At no point in the 60-minute non-conference did the Cardinals find themselves trailing as freshman
Ryan Hubbard opened the scoring with his first of two goals just over six minutes in. The teams would go on to trade goals for the rest of the frame as USILA Division III North Offensive Player of the Week Conor Healey tallied the Saints' first score of the day before Damm pushed the Cardinals in front again with his first.
A man-up strike from
Austin Belz followed by another score from Damm led to the Cardinals' first multi-goal lead of the day. The pair accounted for two goals in a 58-second span in the second quarter while pushed the score to 4-2.
Hubbard added his second of the game before the Saints answered with two to make the score 5-5.
Jack Felter tossed in his first score of the game off an assist from Damm with 20 ticks left in the initial half to make the score 6-5 Cardinals after 30 minutes.
In a low-scoring third, Jon Fairbanks scored for the Saints to knot the score at six, but
James Read conjured up a goal of his own to push the Cardinals ahead for good.
Damm netted the game-winner 3:06 into the deciding 15-minute frame and tallied one more after goals from Read and Felter to cap off a 5-0 scoring run by the visiting team.
After nearly one month away from the Field House Lacrosse Complex, the Cardinals will make a return to their home facility this Saturday to tangle with SUNYAC enemy SUNY Geneseo. Plattsburgh State will begin its 2015 home SUNYAC schedule at 1 p.m.
