KEENE, N.H. – The mission for the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team was abundantly clear right from the opening faceoff.
In its last non-confrefence tilt before State University of New Yor k Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play begins, the Cardinals were on a quest for a big-time triumph over a strong opponent in order to head into their conference schedule with a full head of steam.
Behind a game-high five goals by junior All-American
Brendan Damm and another five from the combination of
Jack Felter and Jame Read, the Cardinals demolished Bowdoin College 15-6 at the Owl Athletic Complex on the campus of Keene State College on Wednesday night.
In their first triumph over a NESCAC foe since 2013, the Cardinals held a marked advantage in every statistical category including a 50-32 edge in total shots. Plattsburgh State ups its record to 6-3 while the Polar Bears sink to 1-6 with the setback.
Led by Damm, Plattsburgh State uncorked its brand of run-and-gun offense right from the get-go. The Montauk, N.Y., product ripped in an unassisted tally just 2:21 in which began a stretch of five straight goals by the designated visiting team.
All told through the first 15 minutes of action, the Cardinals received two scores from Damm and one each from Read and final-year man
Brendan Cefalu who capitalized after snagging a ground ball on a two-on-one break with
Austin Belz.
Meanwhile, on the defensive end of the field, junior
Matt Massaria stonewalled the Polar Bears time and time again. Of the 14 saves the Floral Park, N.Y., product came up with, seven of them came in the first quarter.
It took almost 24 minutes before Bowdoin finally solved Massaria as Matthew Crowell sent one past the junior with 6:02 remaining in the second which made matters 5-1.
That goal, though, was the only one the Polar Bears would register in a span of 45 minutes. Plattsburgh State's lead bulged to 7-1 before the first half was in the books. Damm and Felter accounted for one each in the second 15-minute frame and freshman
Ryan Hubbard began to make his presence known, too.
The Aquabogue, N.Y., native added a goal as well as an assist on Felter's tally to extend his point streak to eight games.
Not entirely satisfied with a six-goal cushion, the Cardinals broke Bowdoin's spirit in the third with five unanswered scores to make matters 12-1. Hubbard beat Polar Bear netminder Peter Mumford for a pair through the course of that 15 minute span while Belz, Damm and Felter each stuck one in the back of the net.
Bowdoin discovered the vast majority of its offense in the fourth with much of it coming from Brandon Rothman who totaled three of the five goals the Polar Bears scored in the last 15 minutes. Again, though, it was Damm, Felter and Read who continued their assault on Bowdoin's goal as each member of the trio scored one through the last quarter.
Mumford made 18 stops for Bowdoin in the loss and the Polar Bears capitalized on two of their three man-up opportunities. Plattsburgh State went 1-for-2 with the extra attacker.
A lengthy road trip is up next for the Cardinals as they dive right into SUNYAC play. Brockport, N.Y., is the destination for Plattsburgh State on Saturday as the Cardinals and Golden Eagles are scheduled to renew their long-standing conference rivalry at noon.
