Cardinals Lakers Rivalry ends in Overtime with a 3-3 Tie.

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team traveled to Oswego looking to avenge a loss earlier in the year to the rival Lakers with first place in the SUNYAC standings on the line, but were unable to draw any closer as the game ended just like last year, a 3-3 tie.

The Cardinals needed a quick start to build confidence and silence the crowd and that's exactly what they got lighting the red lamp just 1:44 into the game.

Brandon O'Quinn got credited with the goal on a one-time from the slot on a pass from Connor Toomey who carried the puck behind the net before throwing it out front connecting with the freshman.

Oswego State would respond with its sophomore sniper Shawn Hulshof 8:01 into the first period.

Hulshof carried the puck down the right boards in the Cardinals zone then cut into the middle ripping a laser glove high on Plattsburgh State goaltender Brady Rouleau.

After trailing 1-0 the Lakers would take the lead five minutes into the second period on a Mike Montagna rebound goal over the glove of Rouleau.

Mitchell Herlihey would setup the goal when he skated in the left side taking a slap shot from the left dot that Rouleau would block aside but right to Montagna who beat Rouleau before he could slide over in time.

However the Cardinals would respond just 2:25 later with a goal of their own.

Coming out of a Plattsburgh State timeout called by Coach Emery the Cardinals would win the draw to Aryton Valente who raced up the left hand boards before tossing the puck into the slot to Kyle Hall who returned tonight night after missing the past six games. Hall's first shot on Oswego State goaltender Matt Zawadzki would be saved but he would cash in on his own rebound tying it at 2-2.
Plattsburgh State would reclaim the its lead 2:13 into the third period when senior transfer Connor Toomey slide one through the pads five-hole on Zawadzki.

After the Cardinals got two great chances shorthanded the Lakers would tie the game 3-3 on the power play at 9:17 in the third.

Assistant captain Nick Rivait picked a great time to score his second goal of the season as the defenseman slide from the point into the middle of the ice wristing one past Rouleau.

Throughout the final 10 minutes of regulation each team would trade chances just missing on the all-important fourth goal.

The game would head to overtime and much like the finals minutes of the third period, each team would trade blows but neither could find the back of the net to break the tie.

Oswego State was able to defend off a Plattsburgh State power play in the extra session that went from 2:11 to just 11 seconds left on the clock.

Cardinals' goaltender Rouleau had his shutout streak come to the end in the first period but finished the streak at 194:27. The sophomore from Quinapiac University stopped 25 shots. His counterpart Zawadzki finished with 30 saves as the Cardinals outshot the Lakers 33-28.

Plattsburgh State goes to 17-5-2 (12-2-1 SUNYAC) as the Lakers remain one point ahead of the Cardinals. With the just one game remaining in the SUNYAC for both teams, the Cardinals need to win at Cortland tomorrow night and have the SUNY Potsdam Bears go into Oswego and defeat the Lakers in order to gain the one seed in the SUNYAC in clinch home ice throughout the SUNYAC tournament.
