PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team played Elmira for the second time in as many days, and like the first time the Cardinals would fall to the Soaring Eagles 6-2.
Plattsburgh State would fall into an early hole as Elmira would start the scoring quickly as they would tally two goals in the first 6:30.
The Soaring Eagles would first score just 2:30 into the first frame when Erin Weston would knock in a rebound off of an initial shot by Ashley Ryan.
The second goal would be credited to Jessica Prance who was positioned in front of the net before collecting the puck and sliding it under Cardinals goaltender Camille Leonard.
Alyssa Parke would cut the Elmira lead to 2-1 when she got Plattsburgh State on the board with a slapshot from the middle of the blue line.
Elmira would stretch its lead back to two on a short-handed goal five minutes into the second period. Leonard was able to handle the first shot by Sydney Fischer but the Cardinal goalie was unable to locate the puck after the save which led to Ashton Hogan adding to her Division III lead in goals with 24 as she tapped it in.
The third period would produce even more offense as the Cardinals would get the game to 3-2 just a minute in. Shannon Stewart would force a turnover behind the Soaring Eagle net before sending a pass out in front of the net connecting the Giovanna Sense who buried her ninth goal of the season.
Just the Cardinals would produce some momentum; Elmira's Hogan would score her second short-handed goal of the game sniping one top corner over the glove of Leonard to put the Soaring Eagles back up two at 4-2.
Elmira would make it 5-2 after Arianna Smith would score her third of the season midway through the final period.
Ashley Ryan would make 6-2 on an empty netter with 3:30 left in the game.
Cardinals' goalie Leonard faced 38 shots finishing with 33 saves while her counterpart Nelson made 39 saves on 41 shots.
Plattsburgh State is now 15-2-2 (11-2-0 ECACW) and will look to turn its fortunes around next weekend when they hit the road to take on SUNY Cortland in an ECAC West double-header.
