PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The top ranked Plattsburgh State women's team completed the weekend sweep over Buffalo State controlling Sunday's game from start to finish in 5-0 victory.
The Cardinals jumped all over Buffalo State in the first period, outshooting the Bengals 25-3 in the first 20 minutes.
Senior,
Giovanna Senese started the scoring for Plattsburgh State netting an easy tap in goal after receiving a cross crease pass from
Kayla Meneghin.
Midway through the first period, the Cardinals would make it 2-0 when freshman,
Ashley Songin netted her first career goal.
Fellow freshman,
Courtney Moriarty would provide a late goal to give Plattsburgh State a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission. While in a scrum for the puck in front of the net, Moriarty was able to knock the puck by Buffalo State goalie Justine Silva with just 58 seconds remaining in the first.
The second period featured more of the same as the Cardinals prevented Buffalo State from registering a single shot all period while tallying two goals of their own.
Jordan Lipson would deflect not one but two
Erin Brand shots from the point beating Silva both times to give Plattsburgh State a 5-0 advantage.
The third would be quite as neither team found the back of the net.
Camille Leonard picked up her nation leading sixth shutout as she blanked the Bengals in both games this weekend. Silva finished with 55 saves on 60 shots after only allowing two goals Saturday night against the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh State finished with a 60-10 shot advantage on the afternoon.
Senior, captain
Bridget Balisy notched three assists Sunday afternoon to pick up her 100
th career point. She now sits at 101 points in 102 games on 46 goals and 55 assists.
Plattsburgh State wraps up its first half of the season with a perfect 12-0-0 (7-0-0 ECACW) record. Buffalo State falls to 8-3-0 (6-2-0 ECACW) after the two losses at the Stafford Ice Arena.
The Cardinals will next play across the border in Montreal, Quebec in the annual Theresa Humes New Year's Tournament. Plattsburgh State will play Carleton, Ottawa and host Concordia in the three day tournament from January 2-4.
