ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team was looking for its first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Cardinals they found themselves on the wrong end of a 72-61 decision against the Oneonta Red Dragons.
Plattsburgh State struggled early, falling behind 8-0 and not having scored a basket for the first three and a half minutes of play. On the other hand the Red Dragons came out firing on all cylinders. Cara Adams dropped 14 first quarter points for Oneonta who lead 25-17 heading into the second quarter.
The Cardinals started to find a rhythm in the second, clawing back into play, however still found themselves trailing 40-33 at halftime.
Through the first five games this season, Plattsburgh State has been exceptional in the third quarter. This was the case again on Saturday as the Cardinals climbed back into contention and only trailed by one heading into the fourth.
It was the Red Dragons in the fourth who pressured the Cardinals, converted on turnovers and second chance points to widen its lead.
Devona Paul dropped 20 points, nine rebounds and two assists for Plattsburgh State, while teammate
Allie Taylor added 15 points, nine boards and two dimes.
The Red Dragons found great production from Cara Adams and Lyteshia Price, who each scored 17 points in the winning effort.
The Cardinals began the season with a 4-0 start to tie the best start in program history, however Plattsburgh State has not been able to find the same groove through the first two SUNYAC conference matchups.
Plattsburgh State will have a break from conference play, traveling to Middlebury next weekend before taking a break for the holiday season.
